As XRP marks its 14th year, Ripple CEO Brad Garlinghouse has taken to social media to celebrate the cryptocurrency’s journey. Garlinghouse expressed personal pride in being part of the XRP community and noted that its growth is due to collaborative efforts within the ecosystem.
Where Does XRP’s True Origin Lie?
Garlinghouse’s anniversary message, however, reignited a longstanding debate over XRP’s genuine inception date. This celebration has once again stirred arguments in the crypto community about when exactly XRP’s “birthday” should be officially recognized.
Is Continuing the Same as Beginning?
Ripple’s Chief Technology Officer, David Schwartz, joined the discussion, defending the continuity of the XRP network. He argued that technological evolutions, like a bank updating its software, do not equate to altering the asset itself, likening XRP’s situation to Ethereum’s shift from proof of work (PoW) to proof of stake (PoS).
Despite Schwartz’s defense, dissent remains. Critics contend that XRP has structurally changed since its early days, rendering the initial version obsolete in the current XRP Ledger.
Can We Trust the Early Records?
The controversy deepens with the absence of complete historical data from XRP Ledger’s inception. The crypto community discovered missing ledger information from June 2012, due to a server malfunction erasing key headers from the first 32,569 ledgers.
Given these technical gaps, full tracking of transactions to the original state is unfeasible, as comprehensive validation starts only at ledger number 32,570. This gap pertains to the initial transactions between June and December 2012.
Critics argue these gaps affect the historical integrity of XRP. Key points include:
- The uninterrupted and traceable history of XRP begins only from late 2012.
- The loss of early data questions the legitimacy of celebrating an anniversary in June.
- Community divides over whether December holds more authentic significance for XRP.
As debates continue, the crypto community remains split on recognizing the true beginning of XRP. While some celebrate its achievements, others remain cautious, questioning the narrative based on historical ambiguities.
