Justice Rebuts Plea for Retrial
Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Mildred Escobedo dismissed requests for a new trial on August 4. Defense lawyers contended that Halem’s past legal counsel was deficient, not summoning key witnesses or adequately examining vital evidence. However, Judge Escobedo highlighted that the prior legal team met reasonable standards. She decisively stated that the wealth of evidence against Halem overshadowed claims of ineffective representation, describing Halem’s actions as motivated by “sheer and utter greed.”
What Happened During the Theft?
In March, Halem was found guilty by a jury after a detailed two-week trial. Prosecutors outlined how Halem and his associates impersonated law enforcement officials with ill intentions. Posing as officers executing a search warrant, they accessed an 18th-floor apartment, deploying police-marked vests and arriving in vehicles linked to Halem’s luxury rental firm. Inside, the group handcuffed the 17-year-old victim and his girlfriend, wielding LAPD-endorsed restraints, and menaced the teen into relinquishing the Bitcoin-laden hard drive.
During the trial, evidence was presented showing Halem listened to police communications post-robbery and messaged companions about potential arrests. The jury quickly concluded, convicting him of all charges the day after deliberations began.
Halem had been part of the LAPD for 13 years and continued as a reserve officer until the crime’s commission.
