David Schwartz, a longtime figure on Ripple‘s tech side, has speculated that XRP could potentially surpass Bitcoin in terms of market capitalization. However, he believes that this scenario is more likely to be achieved through a substantial rise in XRP’s value rather than a downturn in Bitcoin’s. In a recent discussion on a social media platform, Schwartz expressed that the Ripple network was designed to be a faster and more scalable option compared to Bitcoin right from the start.
The Growth Scenario for XRP
Could XRP gain a disproportionate share of the total cryptocurrency market’s growth? Schwartz argues that this is very possible. He points out that the network’s faster transaction capabilities and broader range of functions set it apart from Bitcoin. Speaking as the Chief Technology Officer at Ripple and a principal architect of XRP Ledger, he reinforces the network’s potential to stake a larger claim in the crypto space.
Schwartz believes in XRP’s chances but notes that its potential to surpass Bitcoin wouldn’t necessarily result from a Bitcoin downfall. It would instead stem from XRP’s robust ascension.
Comparing Past and Present Valuations
Recalling his earlier reflections in the year, Schwartz shared his skepticism about XRP’s price trajectory. Back when XRP traded at approximately $0.006, even a rise to $0.25 seemed unlikely to him. He admitted to selling some XRP at around $0.10, considering the market value overly inflated at the time. A similar scenario unfolded with Bitcoin, as reaching $100 once seemed inconceivable. However, Schwartz highlighted a critical distinction between these two cases. The current market value of XRP significantly exceeds Bitcoin’s market value when it first crossed the $100 mark.
Past low levels have gradually become ordinary, but comparing current market values requires maintaining a consistent scale. This insight stresses the need to accurately contextualize market shifts over time.
Levels once considered low are now ordinary, yet the same measurement scale is not maintained in market value comparisons today, Schwartz noted.
Remembering XRP’s Previous Achievements
XRP has, in the past, outstripped Ethereum in market capitalization, notably at the end of December 2017. During this period, XRP’s market cap soared to about $86 billion, surpassing Ethereum’s $73 billion. This ascent positioned XRP as the world’s second-largest cryptocurrency, a status it retained through the year’s end.
At present, XRP holds a market cap of approximately $89.1 billion, priced at $1.42, landing it in the fifth spot in the cryptocurrency rankings. Meanwhile, Bitcoin is priced at approximately $78,693, with a market cap of $1.58 trillion. The data illustrates Bitcoin’s market capitalization is roughly 17.7 times larger than XRP’s. For XRP to overtake Bitcoin, a dramatic valuation surge is essential, besides mere price increase.
- XRP’s current market cap stands at $89.1 billion.
- Bitcoin’s market cap towers at $1.58 trillion.
- XRP remains fifth in the cryptocurrency rankings.
- Bitcoin’s market cap is 17.7 times larger than XRP’s.
To surpass Bitcoin, XRP’s journey will require more than additional price hikes. It demands a comprehensive expansion in its market valuation, bridging the significant existing gap. As the crypto world evolves, the unfolding dynamics between these prominent cryptocurrencies warrant close observation for potential developments.
