Coinbase has obtained the final regulatory approval necessary to establish a fully integrated derivatives framework in the United States. The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) has granted Coinbase Clearing LLC the status of a registered derivatives clearing organization. This pivotal decision allows the company to list, broker, and clear regulated derivatives products within a unified corporate structure.

Three-Tiered Structure Fully Realized

Previously, Coinbase operated as a designated contract market through its CFTC-supervised entity, Coinbase Derivatives LLC, and provided futures commission merchant services via its unit, Coinbase Financial Markets. With the new designation as a derivatives clearing organization, the company completes the final component of its three-layered strategy.

This development enables Coinbase to exert direct control over three critical functions: contract creation and listing, customer facilitation for these products, and in-house transaction clearing. The model mirrors the vertically integrated infrastructure typically associated with major futures exchanges.

Coinbase emphasized the significance of the new structure, highlighting that it positions the company to list, broker, and clear regulated derivatives products under one corporate roof.

USDC Collateral and 24/7 Clearing

A key feature of the Coinbase Clearing framework is its reliance on USDC collateral and a 24-hour clearing system. This model establishes the first U.S.-based clearing organization based on a USDC-native collateral framework and 24/7 settlement. USDC is a stablecoin pegged to the U.S. dollar, founded by Circle in collaboration with Coinbase.

CFTC records indicate that Coinbase Clearing will have the capability to clear fully collateralized futures, options on futures, and swap agreements. This portfolio significantly broadens the company’s operational reach in the derivatives market.

Alternative to Traditional Market Models

Traditional futures markets typically operate based on specific clearing cycles and rely heavily on banking infrastructures. In contrast, Coinbase has tailored its system to the uninterrupted operation typical of cryptocurrency markets. This strategic choice could prove crucial for the growth of perpetually open derivatives products in the United States.

This move is part of Coinbase’s ongoing efforts to expand its derivatives business. Previously, the company had opened regulatory pathways to offer certain perpetual crypto futures products to eligible U.S. customers.

CFTC records confirm that Coinbase Clearing has obtained the authority to clear fully collateralized futures, options, and swap products.

Ongoing Industry Competition and Regulatory Challenges

The race to offer perpetual futures, crypto options, and other similar products in the U.S. is intensifying, and regulatory decisions continue to fuel debate within the industry. Earlier this year, Coinbase managed to secure regulatory facilitation for expanding its access to international derivatives products, a move that drew criticism from traditional exchange operators.

In response, CME initiated a legal challenge against the CFTC, arguing that certain perpetual crypto futures products had been incorrectly classified. Amidst these ongoing discussions, the recent approval further solidifies Coinbase’s institutional infrastructure within the U.S. derivatives market.
