In a groundbreaking integration within Brazil’s financial sector, CSD BR, which oversees approximately $4 trillion in assets, has begun tokenizing investment fund ownership records managed by BTG Pactual on the XRP Ledger. This initiative marks a pivotal shift, drawing significant attention for its real-time financial record-keeping approach.
Official Record System Maintains Role
The collaboration between CSD BR and Ripple involves the tokenization of selected BTG Pactual fund shares, reflected using the Multi Purpose Token standard on the XRP Ledger. However, CSD BR’s existing infrastructure will remain the official source for registration, custody, and reconciliation processes. This distinction clarifies that the ledger will not host CSD BR’s $4 trillion in assets directly but will serve as an additional verification and review layer for live financial records.
CSD BR’s assets are not being transferred to the blockchain; instead, the XRP Ledger acts as a supplemental verification and audit layer for the existing official record system.
Efficiency in Institutional Reconciliation
Authorized institutions will be able to compare the ledgers’ records with CSD BR’s official database almost in real-time. This structure is anticipated to reduce the reconciliation workload typically required among banks, custodians, and securities infrastructure providers.
Institutional control mechanisms remain intact, whereby CSD BR can restrict who can hold or transfer tokenized replicas, freeze assets, or reverse transactions as required by regulators or courts. Identity verification and anti-money laundering controls also remain mandatory for participants.
Mini glossary: Multi Purpose Token is a standard on XRPL for representing different asset types with set rules, offering institutions flexibility in transfer restrictions, issuance control, and compliance requirements.
Focus Shifts to Direct Issue and Trading
The critical phase for companies will commence after the initial matching. CSD BR and Ripple plan to explore the possibility of issuing and trading financial assets directly on the XRP Ledger once the existing infrastructure is tested in real-world operations.
The future blueprint suggests that real estate receivables and agriculture-based credits in Brazil might also be included. If executed, this would evolve the partnership from a blockchain-supported record-keeping model to an on-chain capital market infrastructure.
Starting with live fund records, this structure could pave the way for the issuance and trading of financial assets directly on the XRP Ledger following the trial phase.
Expanding Corporate Use of XRPL
This initiative coincides with the growing corporate utilization of tokenized assets on the XRP Ledger. Ripple is developing a broader infrastructure that ranges from custody services to tokenization, with XRPL being used in corporate-scale tokenized Treasury products and cross-border reconciliation trials.
Earlier this year, Ripple successfully completed a tokenized Treasury product repayment on the XRP Ledger in partnership with Mastercard, Ondo, and JPMorgan, with the fiat segment settled through traditional banking channels.
