Financial technology firm Metallicus has launched the alpha version of its DogecoinVM payment layer on the mainnet, claiming to accelerate Dogecoin transactions by an impressive 300 times. Marshall Hayner, CEO of Metallicus and a board member of the Dogecoin Foundation, highlighted this development as a critical technical step towards establishing Dogecoin as a global payment method.
Parallel Layer on Dogecoin Infrastructure
The newly introduced system does not alter the Dogecoin Core protocol directly. Instead, engineers at Metallicus have implemented the solution as an independent, parallel layer operating atop the Metal Blockchain infrastructure. Hayner emphasized that the system does not create a new coin nor does it interfere with the core structure of Dogecoin.
“DogecoinVM does not produce a new coin nor does it change the Dogecoin Core structure, yet it offers significantly higher speed while preserving the existing user experience,” stated Marshall Hayner.
According to the company, the architecture maintains Dogecoin’s unique UTXO model. Users can continue utilizing their existing Dogecoin wallets and private keys without disruption. Compatibility with current D-starting addresses ensures users do not need to transition to a different wallet.
Enhanced Speed and Operational Model
The increased speed is attributed to the transition from an energy-intensive Proof of Work system to the Snowman consensus protocol, which is based on Proof of Stake. This shift reduces transaction finality time to between 0.15 and 0.25 seconds, loosening traditional block size constraints on transaction capacity.
The system functions on a dual-bridge concept, where DOGE is locked on the mainnet, and its collateral-backed counterpart is created within DogecoinVM on a 1:1 basis. Metallicus asserts that this asset can be instantly redeemed if necessary.
Security Constraints and Usage Goals
During the launch phase, Metallicus has avoided speculation, focusing on implementing SOC 2 security standards commonly used in the banking industry. Although the source code is available on GitHub, the system has yet to undergo independent security audits.
The company noted that the system is live during alpha and beta stages on the Metal Blockchain mainnet, operating under strict limits for security reasons.
To mitigate risks, stringent protections are in place, currently capping individual investments at 100 DOGE. Users are advised to transact with low balances during this early testing phase.
Metallicus views the current version as a foundation for broader deployment. Hayner mentioned that the long-term goal includes practical use by financial technology companies, banks, credit unions, and digital platforms. Fast crypto settlement integration in payment services on platform X is among the potential applications.
