Emin Gün Sirer, the founder of Avalanche, has voiced concerns about artificial intelligence’s potential to uncover software vulnerabilities within blockchain networks like XRP Ledger. He argues that the crypto industry’s focus should shift from worrying about the hypothetical future breakdown of current encryption methods to the immediate risk posed by AI’s ability to identify weaknesses in software layers.
Warnings on Software Vulnerabilities
In a recent commentary on platform X, Sirer suggested that AI exploitation of system-level errors could become a topic of discussion even before widely used cryptographic methods like ECDSA become obsolete. He warns that advanced AI models have the capability to discover flaws in blockchain software, auxiliary libraries, and crypto wallets that might elude human scrutiny.
“The exploitation of system-level errors by AI could surface long before ECDSA becomes ineffective.”
Sirer cautioned that such security flaws could be utilized by attackers, potentially leading to losses amounting to billions of dollars. Although he did not specify any unpatched vulnerabilities within the XRP Ledger or provide concrete examples of AI being used against the network, he pointed to the possibility of zero-day vulnerabilities in the codebases of heavily scrutinized networks with substantial value.
Update Prompts XRP Ledger Discussion
The timing of Sirer’s warning coincides with a recent emergency software update by XRP Ledger developers on September 25. Initially, the developers did not release the source code for security fixes but later promised to do so, accompanied by a backward-looking technical assessment.
Sirer asserts that assuming networks like Ripple, which are high in value but whose usage is debated, are free from vulnerabilities detectable by AI rather than humans, is misleading.
Renowned as the open-source blockchain infrastructure of the XRP ecosystem, the XRP Ledger is particularly focused on payment and transfer processing. The latest security update has reignited discussions around the technical security processes of the network.
Ongoing Debates in the Sector
The discourse regarding AI and cryptography has been fueled by recent statements from key figures in the industry. Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin warned that AI-driven mathematical breakthroughs could challenge lattice-based cryptographic assumptions within two years. Conversely, Cardano founder Charles Hoskinson dismissed these projections as speculative with weak mathematical foundations.
Additionally, Ethereum researcher Justin Drake expressed concerns over AI potentially targeting the widely-employed Elliptic Curve Digital Signature Algorithm in crypto transactions. While Sirer acknowledges the legitimacy of such threats, he maintains that the crypto community should prioritize addressing existing software vulnerabilities.
Tensions between Sirer and Ripple have surfaced publicly before, with Ripple CEO Brad Garlinghouse disputing Sirer’s criticisms regarding Ripple’s adoption by banks. This latest discourse has reignited the debate over security, underscoring the ongoing differences between the parties involved.
