Coinbase Markets has spotlighted a notable trend in the XRP derivatives market, revealing that a significant majority of bullish positions have been established above the current trading price. According to exchange data, 97% of net long nominal positions were opened at levels exceeding XRP’s prevailing market price of $1.31.
Long Positions Face Pressure
A substantial cluster of net long positions has congregated around an average entry price of $1.40, suggesting that much of the bullish interest is in the red. Coinbase Markets warns that this scenario could heighten vulnerability, particularly as the price struggles to recover. Traders might either expand their long positions, anticipating a rebound, or close them to minimize losses. Should the downturn persist, those utilizing leverage could face pressure to liquidate their holdings.

Risk of Selling Pressure Emerges
This market structure could spawn additional selling pressure. As leveraged positions close while incurring losses, new downward pressure might emerge, risking a self-sustaining cycle of declines and position closures. Conversely, should XRP prices recover, traders may opt to maintain or even enlarge their long positions in response.
Data Does Not Reflect All Investors
The 97% figure cited by Coinbase does not imply that all XRP holders face losses. This data exclusively captures net positioning in the derivatives market, measuring the disparity between long and short derivative trades at specified entry levels rather than overall market participants.
Glassnode’s methodology calculates the difference between open long and short positions at each entry price level. If the difference is positive, longs exceed shorts; if negative, the opposite holds true. This method allows for tracking market sentiment relative to price points.
Short Positions Also Concentrated at Certain Levels
Glassnode data also highlights notable net short positioning around $1.49 and $1.50 levels, with the largest negative cluster surpassing a nominal value of $20 million. This underscores the uneven distribution of positions in the XRP derivatives market, hinting at a lack of consensus among traders.
Net short positioning around $1.49 and $1.50 reinforces the market’s imbalance.
Nonetheless, entry levels provided in graphs do not directly correspond to liquidation prices. The level at which traders might be forced to exit depends on factors like leverage ratios, collateral structures, and margin requirements.
