In a groundbreaking move, Aviva Investors has teamed up with Ripple to tokenize a share class of its flagship Sterling Liquidity Fund on the XRP Ledger. The fund, which primarily invests in short-term UK government bonds, boasts a substantial market size of £22 billion. This endeavor marks a significant milestone in the intersection of traditional finance and blockchain technology.
Limited Initial Deployment
For the initial rollout, Aviva Investors allocated £50 million to this blockchain-based tranche. Alongside a dollar pilot launched in July, the company’s total digital asset holdings in Europe have slightly surpassed £86 million. This represents approximately 0.4% of the main fund, thus not aligning with expectations of transferring the entire fund to the blockchain. Nonetheless, this venture stands out as a tangible instance of regulated institutional use within the XRPL ecosystem during a period of cautious financial approaches in London.
Mark Versey, CEO of Aviva Investors, emphasized the company’s pioneering role in this domain, stating that tokenization could enhance internal processes and ultimately yield better outcomes for clients.
Embracing a Digital Twin Approach
Rather than altering the core structure of the fund established in 2002, Aviva Investors opted for a model that maintains existing systems while creating a digital replica. In this framework, XRPL efficiently handles ownership records with speed and cost-effectiveness, while the cash and underlying assets remain under the traditional financial framework. This model retains regulatory protections, compliance processes, and daily liquidity intact, leveraging blockchain’s transaction efficiency without disrupting current legal and operational frameworks.
Operational Structure Distributed Among Three Institutions
To mitigate operational risks, the process’s structure is divided among three major institutions. BNY Mellon continues to handle the custody of physical assets, Komainu provides digital wallet security, and Licuido oversees the technical aspects of tokenization. Access to the new share class remains restricted to professional investors who pass comprehensive customer verification processes, with no availability for retail investors.
The established model retains the core structure of the fund while utilizing XRPL for ownership record processing, with underlying assets remaining in traditional custody arrangements.
A New Example in Institutional Use
This initiative is part of a broader search within the financial sector for new settlement infrastructures that operate beyond conventional banking hours. As the shift moves towards continuous operation models, tokenized fund shares are increasingly being tested on an institutional level. Serving as a technical partner, Ripple plays a crucial role in this process, developing payment and digital asset infrastructures. Aviva Investors’ step forward represents a new example of utilizing XRPL within regulated, real-world financial products.
