Brian Armstrong, the CEO of Coinbase, suggests that stablecoins combined with the x402 payment protocol could revolutionize online content consumption by eliminating mandatory monthly subscriptions. According to Armstrong, this new model would facilitate small transaction payments per use, making them more practical for users who wish to access individual content items.
x402 Micro-Payment System Gains Traction
In discussions on the X platform, Armstrong emphasized that the combination of stablecoins and the x402 protocol will reduce friction in payment processes for businesses and users alike. By enabling usage-based micro-payments, the system could establish a more adaptable framework for digital content sales.
Brian Armstrong highlighted that businesses could accept micro-payments per use, reducing transaction friction significantly.
Armstrong pointed out the potential for reevaluating the existing subscription model, particularly in the sphere of online news content. He argued that users shouldn’t have to purchase monthly subscriptions for accessing just one article. Instead, AI intermediaries could facilitate content acquisition on behalf of users, paying publishers solely for the content accessed.
Protocol Launched in 2025
Coinbase introduced the x402 protocol in May 2025. Its name draws on the HTTP 402 status code, a relic from the early internet days, yet underutilized for payments. Coinbase ambitions to transform this technicality into a streamlined payment process.
For instance, if an article costs $0.25, instead of pushing users through subscription paywalls, an AI intermediary could handle the transaction. Once the user grants permission, the AI would process a $0.25 stablecoin payment to the publisher upon request.
Armstrong indicated that, instead of monthly subscriptions, an AI intermediary could conduct one-time payments for articles on behalf of the user.
Tech Giants Expand Payment Infrastructure
This initiative emerges as Coinbase and other tech giants expand infrastructure for AI payments. In June, Coinbase collaborated with Amazon Web Services to allow publishers using AWS CloudFront and Web Application Firewall to monetize via x402-driven AI intermediary transactions.
By September, Cloudflare introduced its Monetization Gateway in closed beta. This platform enables participating businesses to issue payment requests via x402 for website, data set, and API access, channeled through AI intermediaries.
Based in the U.S., Coinbase operates not just in crypto exchange services but also in custody, payments, and blockchain infrastructure. Armstrong’s insights suggest the company aims to broaden its role beyond trading to include enhanced digital payment infrastructures.
