Dogecoin‘s chart has signaled a potential downturn as a ‘death cross’ formed with the 50-day simple moving average (SMA) crossing below the 200-day SMA. This occurrence, seen for the first time since November 2025, often suggests weakening trends, historically preceding extended periods of price weakness.
Conflicting Signals in Rapid Succession
The death cross follows closely on the heels of an earlier ‘golden cross’ which emerged on October 5, when the 50-day average moved above the 200-day average, promising a more robust medium-term outlook. However, the recent reversal indicates a rapid shift in market sentiment.
A golden cross occurs when a short-term moving average rises above a long-term average, typically heralding a recovery in momentum. Conversely, a death cross occurs when a short-term average dips below a long-term average, indicating a potential downturn.
Dogecoin community member Krisspax commented on the unusual rate at which these opposite signals occurred, noting that the brief three-week interval between them underscores the asset’s volatility.
Krisspax noted, “The death cross forming mere weeks after a golden cross highlights unprecedented volatility in Dogecoin, with the shortest interval observed for such signals in DOGE history.”
Price Surge Followed by Sharp Decline
In the days leading up to the death cross signal, Dogecoin’s price experienced a brief rally, reaching $0.081 on October 29. However, momentum quickly faded, and prices began to fall, delineating the divergence between the technical outlook and short-lived price recovery.
Dogecoin’s value slipped to $0.074 on Thursday, and continued declining to $0.072 by Friday, marking its lowest point since August 2026. Contributing to the pullback was the broader market pressure following reports of a $6.3 billion security breach at Binance.
Liquidations Reach $1.68 Billion
Recent data from CoinGlass indicates that liquidations surged to $1.68 billion within the past 24 hours, predominantly comprising $1.43 billion from long positions. This highlights a sell-off wave affecting not just Dogecoin, but the wider cryptocurrency market.
Key levels to watch in the short term include $0.069, with $0.086 serving as a threshold near daily moving averages. The latest technical signals underscore a weakening short-term trend compared to the long-term outlook for Dogecoin.
The rapid succession of a golden cross followed by a death cross in three weeks marks an abrupt shift in market momentum.
