Ripple CEO Brad Garlinghouse has addressed concerns that the introduction of the RLUSD stablecoin might undermine the future of XRP. Garlinghouse clarified that RLUSD and XRP are distinct, complementary assets within the Ripple ecosystem rather than competitors.
Functional Differences Between XRP and RLUSD
Echoing sentiments expressed by a well-known commentator in the XRP Ledger community, known as Vet, Garlinghouse highlighted the differing roles these assets play. XRP is integral to the core functioning of the XRP Ledger as a native asset, required for all accounts as reserves and for transaction fees. Meanwhile, RLUSD is a dollar-pegged stablecoin, tailored for transactions demanding greater price stability.
Brad Garlinghouse supported Vet’s assessment, stating, “They complement each other, they do not compete.”
XRP’s necessity stems from its direct involvement in the network’s operations. Unlike RLUSD, which can be frozen by Ripple under certain legal obligations, XRP lacks centralized control, reflecting its essential role in maintaining network integrity.
Debate Over XRP’s Central Role
Vet further noted that XRP’s pivotal function extends to its use within the built-in decentralized exchange of the XRP Ledger. The network’s automatic bridge system utilizes XRP for transactions to secure the best exchange rates, thereby positioning it as a preferred intermediary for liquidity providers and market makers.
Conversely, RLUSD might find its niche in scenarios like payroll, billing, and institutional transfers, where price stability is crucial. This evolution has sparked debate among market participants over whether RLUSD could ultimately supplant XRP in certain payment scenarios.
Vet commented, “RLUSD is optional, XRP is not,” underscoring XRP’s indispensable status within the network.
RLUSD Demand May Not Directly Boost XRP Use
A critical aspect of the discourse is that RLUSD is not restricted to the XRP Ledger; it operates on other blockchains, including Ethereum. Consequently, an increase in RLUSD demand does not necessarily translate to a proportional rise in XRP Ledger activity.
Similarly, even if RLUSD transactions rise on the XRP Ledger, this alone may not significantly inflate XRP’s market price. Despite transaction fees being paid in XRP, uncertainties remain regarding how these developments will affect the asset’s market valuation.
Garlinghouse Reiterates XRP Commitment Amid RLUSD Growth
Previously, Garlinghouse dismissed speculation that Ripple might deprioritize XRP in favor of RLUSD. Known for its cross-border payment solutions and enterprise blockchain products, Ripple maintains its foundational commitment to XRP.
During the Ripple Swell 2026 conference in New York on October 28, Garlinghouse asserted Ripple’s unwavering commitment to XRP. His remarks underscored confidence in XRP maintaining its role within Ripple’s growing ecosystem, despite RLUSD’s expansion.
Garlinghouse clarified Ripple’s stance at the event, declaring, “We will never abandon XRP.”
