In early November, the US spot Bitcoin ETF market witnessed substantial outflows totaling $842.12 million, with significant withdrawals occurring on November 5th and 6th. The majority of these transactions involved BlackRock’s IBIT fund, prompting concerns over market stability. Concurrently, CoinGlass data indicates potential pressure on derivatives trading, with liquidations for short positions likely to increase if Bitcoin surpasses $77,000, and for long positions if it drops below $75,000.
BlackRock Leads ETF Withdrawals
According to SoSoValue, US spot Bitcoin ETFs experienced a net outflow of $430.2 million on November 5th, followed by a $411.92 million outflow the next day. On November 6th, BlackRock’s IBIT fund saw a major withdrawal of $403 million. Other affected funds included Bitwise’s BITB with $20.55 million out, Ark 21Shares’ ARKB at $20.09 million, and Grayscale’s GBTC with a net exit of $11.11 million.
“Fidelity’s FBTC fund stood out for concluding the day with a net inflow of $42.82 million, the sole fund recording gains amidst the outflow trend,” according to the market report.
Heightened Liquidation Threats at $77,000 and Above
Data from CoinGlass suggests a high density of liquidation for short positions could reach a cumulative $958 million if Bitcoin’s price climbs above $77,000 on major exchanges. Alternatively, if Bitcoin falls below $75,000, long positions might face a projected liquidation pressure of $345 million.
BlockBeats commented, “These figures represent the intensity of liquidation clusters relative to surrounding price levels, rather than an exact liquidation amount. Taller bars indicate a greater potential for liquidations to amplify price movements.”
Market analyst Murphy observed that on November 5th, the spot volume discrepancy (SVD) in exchanges shifted considerably in favor of sellers. Murphy highlighted that the active selling pressure reached unprecedented levels since August’s upward trend, even surpassing the selling observed post-Binance’s security incident on October 30th.
According to Murphy, the pressure to sell has intensified, and whether buyers can absorb the increased sales remains uncertain. He suggested that if a subsequent wave of similar magnitude does not significantly depress prices, it could signal deeper buying interest. He also pointed out that the recent security incident at Binance and aggressive market declines in US exchanges have undermined confidence in the current bullish sentiment. Panic’s effect may extend for several weeks to months, suggesting a limited probability of a swift V-shaped recovery.
Murphy emphasized the need to monitor investor behavior, market sentiment, and token distribution dynamics carefully in the evolving landscape. Should Bitcoin surpass the $77,000 mark, it might accelerate upward moves due to triggered short position liquidations. A more definitive sign of bolstering spot demand in this scenario would be the ability to withstand large-scale selling without a significant downturn in prices.
