Shubh Varma, CEO and co-founder of Hyblock Capital, a renowned crypto research firm, has asserted that the anticipated altcoin season may not materialize in this market cycle. Contrary to speculations of XRP reaching $5 and DOGE hitting $1, Varma indicates that a wide-scale altcoin rally remains improbable.
Data-Driven Insights Challenge Market Sentiment
Varma bases his forecast not on market sentiment but on empirical data. He defines an altcoin season as a period when a substantial number of alternative cryptocurrencies outperform Bitcoin over a specific timeframe. An altcoin season can be declared if approximately 75% of tracked altcoins surpass Bitcoin performance.
Shubh Varma states, “An altcoin season can be identified if around 75% of 100 monitored altcoins outperform Bitcoin over an extended period.”
According to Varma, no evident altcoin season has emerged in the past one and a half to two years. Despite recent surges in Bitcoin’s price, such a trend has not been observed. Varma interprets this not as a temporary pause but as a signal of a structural shift in the market.
Diversification of Investment Opportunities
Varma’s central argument revolves around the diversification of investment opportunities compared to previous cycles. Historically, during bullish phases, capital tended to funnel into a relatively narrow selection of altcoins due to the limited product range on crypto platforms.
Presently, however, these platforms feature products linked to real-world assets and artificial intelligence tools, creating direct competition for altcoins in attracting investment capital. Varma argues that the historical pattern of Bitcoin profits trickling down to smaller cryptos no longer applies in the same manner.
The introduction of real-world asset (RWA) tokenization on blockchains, encompassing digitized versions of traditional assets like bonds, funds, or commodities, represents a key change.
Broad Rally Expectations Diminish
Not predicting a complete collapse of altcoins, Varma, however, expresses skepticism regarding the classic altcoin season scenarios that underpin the projected valuations of XRP at $5 and DOGE at $1. He notes the increased demand targeting other market sectors, suggesting that significant capital rotation similar to past cycles should not be anticipated.
“With numerous areas for investment demand, I personally do not foresee the scenarios where XRP hits $5 and DOGE reaches $1 based on a classic altcoin season,” Varma shares.
Re-Evaluating Old Cycle Models
This assessment highlights a critical departure for investors relying on cyclical models prevalent during the 2020 and 2021 periods. Given changes in market dynamics, Varma posits that the automatic correlation between diminished Bitcoin dominance and a widespread altcoin surge has weakened.
Consequently, the debate shifts from merely assessing the strength or weakness of altcoins. The focus transitions to the expanding diversity of products available to investors on similar exchanges, allowing capital to find numerous alternatives beyond established altcoins.
