Billy Markus, one of the co-founders of Dogecoin, stirred interest in the cryptocurrency community with a humorous post on his X account regarding the prevalence of Shiba Inu dogs in Japan. Markus, who is also known online as Shibetoshi Nakamoto, observed that approximately half of the dogs he encountered in Japan were Shiba Inu. This lighthearted remark gained attention because Dogecoin famously drew inspiration from this breed.

Symbolic Connection Between Shiba Inu and Dogecoin

The comments from Markus were based on personal observations made during his visit to Japan. The Shiba Inu remains one of Japan’s most recognized indigenous dog breeds. Dogecoin’s visual identity was originally crafted around this breed, imbuing Markus’s comments with more than just cultural insight—it represents a symbolic connection. Markus remarked,

“About 50% of the dogs I saw in Japan seemed to be Shiba Inu” and shared this with a touch of humor.

Dogecoin was launched on December 6, 2013, inspired by the widely recognized “Doge” meme. The meme captivated internet users with its colorful text and amusing inner-monologue style, transcending its origins as a mere online joke to become an expansive digital cultural trend.

Kabosu’s Integral Place in Internet Culture

At the heart of the meme lies a 2010 photograph of a Shiba Inu named Kabosu, adopted by Japanese teacher Atsuko Sato from an animal shelter in 2008. The photos Sato took at her home and shared on her blog quickly gained traction across online forums, evolving into one of the most recognizable visuals in internet culture. Atsuko Sato played an indirect role in Kabosu’s global fame through these postings.

Kabosu’s photo lounging on a couch with crossed paws swiftly transitioned from blogs to forums, establishing itself as the primary image of the Doge trend.

The expression of Kabosu, paired with text written in a humorous, broken English style, became a symbol of a new era in internet humor. This format profoundly influenced the inception of dog-themed digital assets, notably Dogecoin, and later tokens such as Shiba Inu also leveraged this cultural wave.

From Joke to Prominent Digital Asset

Dogecoin was originally conceived as a joke by Billy Markus and Jackson Palmer but gained traction far beyond its whimsical beginnings. According to CoinMarketCap, Dogecoin ranks as the 12th largest cryptocurrency with a market capitalization of $11.17 billion.

The face of the Doge meme, Kabosu, passed away in May 2024 after achieving internet fame for over 14 years. Kabosu’s passing resonated deeply within both the online community and the cryptocurrency sector, marking the end of an iconic era.
