Centralized Crypto Exchanges Face Disruptions Due to Trading Firms’ Actions

The recent surge in the cryptocurrency market has led to notable infrastructure stress on prominent centralized exchanges. Ivo Crnkovic-Rubsamen, a strategy manager and technical officer at dYdX exchange, pinpointed algorithmic trading firms as the primary source of recent exchange outages. These firms have ramped up their trading activities to secure their positions amid swift market movements, leading to a significant rise in orders and cancellations submitted to exchange matching engines.

Exchange Outages Coincide with Bitcoin’s Price Spike

Major exchanges like Binance, Coinbase, Kraken, and Bybit have encountered technical difficulties, particularly after Bitcoin‘s price climbed past $60,000 for the first time in two years on February 28. Crnkovic-Rubsamen explained that such firms could increase their trading output by 20-fold in these scenarios, a pattern observed in previous bullish periods or times of heightened investor activity.

Market Dynamics and Centralized Exchange Limitations

In the wake of the disruptions, investment research firm Citron has advocated for the short-selling of Coinbase shares, though the shares have experienced an 11.36% increase, according to Google Finance data. Crnkovic-Rubsamen also discussed how centralized exchanges often place trading limits based on trust for certain market makers, which can exacerbate system loads during bull markets.

These special limits become problematic when market makers intensify their trading velocity during bull runs. While centralized exchanges can handle standard trading volumes efficiently, their reliability can falter under the extreme pressure of vigorous market upturns, unlike decentralized exchanges, where rate limits are protocol-governed, and there’s no preferential treatment for market makers.

Centralized platforms are generally dependable for routine trade operations; however, they may not be as resilient as decentralized exchanges when handling peak market activity. This distinction highlights the growing demand for robust trading infrastructure capable of withstanding the dynamics of a rapidly evolving crypto market.
