Why Did CZ Face Legal Issues?

In November 2023, Changpeng Zhao encountered a landmark event, being sentenced to three years in prison. Zhao accepted the charges against him and stepped down as CEO. Despite multiple requests to lift his travel ban, it was denied, culminating in a four-month prison term. Zhao was found guilty of violating the Bank Secrecy Act, and Richard Teng succeeded him as CEO, vowing to support ongoing legal proceedings.

The legal settlement also included a $50 million fine for Zhao and a $4.3 billion fine for Binance. Additionally, the Department of Justice enforced stricter oversight by appointing Forensic Risk Alliance, an independent consulting firm, to monitor Binance’s operations for the next three years.
