The cost of servicing the United States’ national debt has hit a new milestone, with a staggering $529 billion spent on interest payments between October 2025 and March 2026. This surge poses significant challenges as a growing portion of federal income is funneled toward debt expenses, thereby rivaling expenditures in crucial sectors.
How Do Interest Payments Compare to Other Major Expenses?
During this period, monthly interest payments averaged approximately $88 billion, outstripping combined budgets for several key departments. The Defense Department, for instance, received $461 billion over the same timeframe, while the Department of Education was allocated $70 billion, underscoring the alarming scale of interest expenses.
Comparing year-over-year data, interest payments increased by 7% from the previous year’s expenditure of $497 billion. This rise is attributed to higher long-term interest rates and an expanded debt base, rendering short-term interest rate declines insufficient to counterbalance the overall rise, according to the Congressional Budget Office (CBO).
