Hyperliquid Labs is advancing towards a pivotal collaboration with Payward, the parent entity of the cryptocurrency exchange Kraken, as part of an ambitiously strategic maneuver targeting the U.S. financial landscape. With intentions to deploy its burgeoning perpetual futures products through a regulated American platform, the alliance showcases an interest to align with compliance while broadening market reach, reports suggest.
Bitnomial at the Core?
The prospective agreement positions Bitnomial, owned by Payward, to potentially provide registered American investors with access to specific cryptocurrency perpetual futures contracts linked to Hyperliquid’s blockchain. However, such developments hinge on regulatory green lights, while the financial terms of this arrangement remain undisclosed. Bitnomial, backed by robust derivatives infrastructure in the U.S., was officially acquired by Payward earlier this year.
Payward has reportedly submitted a proposal outlining the structure of this innovative partnership to the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC).
Navigating U.S. Barriers: Possible?
Should the deal materialize, it would signify Hyperliquid’s inaugural and direct engagement with the U.S. market. Hyperliquid’s main trading interface currently bars U.S. users, necessitating a strategic framework that complies with domestic derivatives regulations while avoiding existing restrictions. Thus, the proposed structure is posited as a solution to these limitations.
The challenges Hyperliquid faces are not solely attributable to its products but extend to its technical and operational configurations. The platform’s trading interface operates independently of its underlying permissionless blockchain, explicitly excluding U.S. individuals and entities.
Contractual limitations further obstruct “restricted persons,” a category encapsulating those located in or native to the United States, from accessing Hyperliquid’s core interface.
A Regulated Template for Overseas Platforms?
This envisaged model could potentially pave a precedent not just for Hyperliquid, but for international crypto trading platforms seeking to serve U.S. users without sidestepping derivative regulations. The ready-made regulatory framework that Bitnomial provides makes it a strategic partner for controlled market entry.
While Hyperliquid’s primary interface excludes U.S. users, a Bitnomial-facilitated structure paves the way for regulated access to this lucrative market.
The platform processes daily transaction volumes exceeding $4 billion. With regulatory approval, this initiative could reshape Hyperliquid’s business model within a more institutional framework while geographically expanding its presence.
