Coinbase Markets recently unveiled data suggesting that financial traders are anticipating a massive price shift in XRP within the next week. This insight comes from comparing options pricing of XRP against its historical average week-long movements, revealing a significant deviation.
Will XRP Defy Expectations?
Data from Coinbase highlighted that the projected volatility level for XRP is 1.54 times its usual historical movement. This number surpasses those of other digital assets like Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Solana, which were calculated at 1.50, 1.45, and 1.15 times, respectively. This suggests that speculative interest in XRP has reached a pinnacle compared to its own records.
“Coinbase Markets indicates that XRP is priced above its historical pace, while Solana remains at lower levels in this aspect,” according to the trading platform.
The past median absolute weekly move for XRP is recorded at approximately 5%, whereas current option pricing points to a heightened forecast of a 7.7% movement. With XRP trading around $1.43, such a variance translates to an expected shift of about 11 cents in either direction.
Understanding the Volatility Pricing?
The anticipated 7.7% movement reflects the implied volatility incorporated into at-the-money options. Coinbase calculates this by utilizing implied volatility data combined with a square root time adjustment technique.
In this scenario, investors are pricing options under the expectation of noticeably increased fluctuation in XRP within the coming week. The boost in implied volatility suggests that investors are willing to pay a premium for options, whether for hedging or speculative purposes.
For option buyers to justify the high premiums, the actual price movement needs to be substantial.
Will Reality Meet the Market’s Expecatations?
- If XRP’s price remains confined to its historical 5% weekly fluctuation, current option premiums might appear overpriced.
- However, should XRP witness a more pronounced excursion beyond typical weekly limits, the existing volatility pricing could prove reasonable.
- The strong demand for call options suggests that some investors are considering the potential for an upward price breakout.
In the past day, XRP has risen just over 6%, trading near $1.43. Over the last month, it gained about 43.85% in value, while over the previous three months, its value increased by approximately 15.95%.
