In the aftermath of the U.S. midterm elections, cryptocurrencies associated with Donald Trump suffered some of the steepest declines among the top 100 digital assets on Wednesday. This downturn occurred despite a broader rally in the crypto market, raising questions about the future of tokens tied to political figures.
Heightened Selling Pressure on Trump-Linked Tokens
According to CoinMarketCap, the Official Trump token (TRUMP) slumped 17% in the past 24 hours to $1.33, while World Liberty Financial (WLFI) shed more than 7% to $0.047. TRUMP debuted as the official meme coin in January 2025, whereas WLFI is known as the governance token of the decentralized finance project World Liberty Financial, backed by the Trump family.
The sell-off was not limited to these assets. The MELANIA token, linked to Melania Trump, dropped about 13% to $0.066. Meanwhile, the VANCE token, named after U.S. Vice President JD Vance, fell nearly 12%, despite having no verified official connection to Vance.
Cap founder and CEO Benjamin Sarquis Peillard stated, “Bitcoin and similar established assets move with liquidity, institutional flows, and macroeconomic conditions, whereas politically-linked tokens can be more sensitive to expectation shifts in Washington.”
Political Tokens Diverge Amid Broader Market Gains
During the same timeframe, the broader crypto market experienced an upward trend. Bitcoin surged over 4% to approximately $80,500, while Ether climbed 6% to $2,433. Other gains included Binance Coin (BNB) up 3%, XRP up 2.6%, and Solana up 2.5%, with the total cryptocurrency market capitalization increasing by 3.4% to $2.69 trillion.
In contrast, the political-themed meme coin segment took a downturn. Its total market cap plunged over 16% in one day to $477 million, yet trading volumes soared by 123% to $437 million, indicating a rising trend in selling and repositioning during this volatile price movement.
Election Results Could Influence Regulatory Agenda
The drop in token prices followed the Democrats’ takeover of the House of Representatives and the Senate from the Republicans, with surprising results particularly in Texas. This shift may hinder Trump’s crypto plans and subject his family’s crypto ventures to stricter scrutiny.
Peillard highlighted that investors view politically-linked tokens differently from other cryptocurrencies, suggesting that election outcomes could have prompted a short-term reaction. “The main question is what will drive demand for these tokens beyond their political ties,” he observed.
Peillard noted, “The midterm results added a new layer of uncertainty to the direction and speed of digital asset regulations, which is being priced in more quickly by political tokens.”
CLARITY Act Returns to Spotlight
The election results have reignited discussions on the future of crypto regulations in the U.S. The Digital Asset Market Clarity Act, aimed at establishing a regulatory framework for digital assets, stalled in the Senate this year due to failing to secure the necessary 60 votes. Democrats demanded stronger ethical standards and additional safeguards against conflicts of interest tied to Trump’s crypto ventures, while four Republican senators opposed advancing the legislation.
The crypto sector continues to evoke both support and opposition across Washington from both parties. Nonetheless, the uncertainty persists over whether Congress can establish a permanent, clear regulatory framework regardless of which party holds power.
