Riot Platforms has significantly shifted its financial strategy in the third quarter of 2026, selling 79% of its Bitcoin holdings to redirect resources towards artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure. The company’s latest financial report reveals a steep decline in its crypto reserves, from 11,380 BTC to just 2,418 BTC.
Texas Deal Forms Backbone of Strategic Shift
Throughout the first nine months of the year, Riot sold a total of 20,264 BTC, generating approximately $1.5 billion in revenue. This capital is earmarked for a new infrastructure project designed to support high-performance computing needs, marking a significant strategic pivot for the company.
The cornerstone of this transformation is a 15-year lease agreement for a 910-megawatt site in Corsicana, Texas, designed to accommodate energy-intensive computing operations. Frontier AI Lab emerges as the strategic partner in this venture, with a strong pedigree in AI research and development.
The lease, known in industry terms as a “triple net lease” and “powered land lease,” places the responsibility for maintenance, insurance, and taxes on the tenant, facilitating long-term, energy-intensive data center projects. The deal’s initial valuation stands at a staggering $28 billion, with anticipated annual rental revenue of about $1.8 billion. Riot projects its total data center capacity, including other initiatives, to reach 1,151 megawatts, unlocking a long-term revenue potential of $38 billion.
Mining Revenue Decline Amid Strategic Realignment
Jason Les, CEO of Riot, explained that the deal employs a triple net lease model, ensuring costs of computing equipment and maintenance are borne by the clients. This approach is expected to nearly halve construction costs compared to standard Tier 3 data centers.
Jason Les emphasized that this structure allows the company to progress without additional equity issuance, thus avoiding dilution of existing shareholder interests.
This strategic pivot occurs against the backdrop of declining profit margins in traditional Bitcoin mining, with the company’s quarterly mining revenue plunging by 28% to $116 million. Despite this, Riot managed to produce 1,637 BTC during the same period.
Total quarterly revenue rose by 1% year-over-year to $181.4 million, surpassing market expectations, with a net income reported at $4.03 million.
Market Reaction and Liquidity Management
In its efforts to streamline its balance sheet, Riot fully settled a $200 million credit line with Coinbase, reclaiming 5,821 BTC used as collateral. The company concluded the quarter with $950.2 million in available liquidity, including cash and remaining crypto assets.
As of the balance sheet date, Riot holds 2,418 BTC, a portion of which may be liquidated in the fourth quarter to finance construction activities in Texas.
Riot shares climbed to $16.20 at the market’s opening before stabilizing between $15.45 and $15.50, with trading volumes remaining robust.
