As November unfolds, gold prices maintain their downward trend, with market focus now on the upcoming December meeting of the U.S. Federal Reserve. Amidst persistent selling pressure, the price of gold nears the $3,900 mark with attention pivoted towards interest rate trajectories and forthcoming inflation and employment data from the U.S.

Selling Pressure Remains Persistent

By November 3, gold futures had slipped to $3,946.85, reflecting a $22.75 decline, translating to a 0.57% drop. Meanwhile, spot gold traded at $3,935.13, showing a 0.24% decline over a four-hour timeframe. Though these price points pertain to different market instruments and are not directly comparable, they collectively highlight the ongoing pressure on the market.

In the short term, the $3,900 to $3,880 range serves as a critical support zone. Should this area be breached, prices might revisit levels around $3,800 and further down to the $3,700s. For a sustained upward recovery, gold needs to surpass the $3,975 to $4,000 band and establish a foothold above $4,044.

The sustainable strengthening of gold’s short-term recovery hinges on consistently surpassing the $4,000 threshold followed by the $4,044 level.

Liquidity conditions also suggest a cautious market atmosphere. There’s potential resistance between $4,200 and $4,600, while a broader liquidity zone exists between $3,800 and $3,900. These are not definitive pivot points but technical concentration areas watched by traders.

Fed Decision Could Be Decisive

The Federal Reserve, during its October 28 meeting, held the policy interest rate steady at the 3.75% to 4.00% range. However, two members advocated for a quarter-point rate hike, showcasing a split within the committee. The Fed also emphasized that inflation remains elevated, maintaining the likelihood of a tighter stance ahead of its December 8-9 meeting.

As one of the most closely monitored central banks, the Fed’s decisions profoundly impact the dollar’s trajectory, bond yields, and commodity prices. Consequently, even subtle changes in its discourse can intensify volatility in the gold market.

A signal towards a rate hike or tighter monetary policy could bolster the dollar and bond yields, maintaining pressure on gold.

Conversely, should inflation data appear more moderate, or employment market slowdowns become evident, or if the Fed adopts a softer stance, rate expectations may ease. Such a scenario could pave the way for gold to limit its losses and regain strength.

Monitoring Year-End Levels

A potential recovery in November and December cannot be entirely ruled out, yet current chart dynamics do not confirm this prospect. Continued retreat in bond yields and a weakening dollar might boost gold demand. However, the lack of sustained support around $3,900 could prolong the decline towards the end of the year.

In a longer-term analysis, central bank purchases and geopolitical risks are factors that could underpin safe-haven demand. Still, the definitive influences on market direction remain the Federal Reserve’s December decision, U.S. macroeconomic data, the dollar index, and real yields.
