Ripple has significantly expanded its international presence with its London office now being the company’s largest hub outside the United States. Cassie Craddock, Ripple’s Managing Director for the UK and Europe, highlighted this development, noting the office’s growth from occupying two floors in 2018 to three fully occupied floors today.
Strategic Choice for London Office
The decision to prioritize London was driven by the UK’s robust capital markets, established legal system, experienced regulatory framework, and a deep reservoir of financial talent. Craddock shared these insights following a session at Ripple’s Swell conference held at the British Residence in New York City.
Craddock stated, “When we moved into our current office in 2018, it was just two floors, with plenty of empty desks—now it’s expanded to three floors and we’ve hit capacity limits.”
However, she acknowledged that past regulatory uncertainties limited Ripple’s ability to forge deeper connections with major financial institutions in the UK.
Deepening UK Financial Ties Since 2016
Ripple first established its footprint in the UK on March 21, 2016, by opening an office in London’s Canary Wharf, responding to European banks’ increasing interest in distributed ledger technologies and cross-border settlement solutions.
By April 2016, the company had set up Ripple Europe Ltd, which was rebranded as Ripple Markets UK Ltd in August 2022. Over subsequent years, Ripple continued to strengthen its ties with the UK’s financial institutions.
In April 2018, Santander rolled out its international payment application, One Pay FX, using Ripple’s xCurrent technology. Furthering its European reach, in February 2022, Ripple partnered with London-based payment company Modulr, aiming to simplify cross-border payments in the UK and across Europe.
Regulatory Licenses and Innovative Collaborations
A major milestone for Ripple in the UK was achieved on January 9, with the company receiving an electronic money institution license and crypto asset registration from the Financial Conduct Authority. These approvals bolster Ripple’s capacity to offer regulated cross-border payment services to UK institutions.
In February, Ripple formed a strategic alliance with Aviva Investors to examine tokenization of traditional investment funds. This collaboration led to the launch of tokenized sterling liquidity fund shares on the XRP Ledger on October 26.
Moreover, Ripple has been involved in blockchain research within the UK. In January 2026, it committed over £5 million to UK universities through the University Blockchain Research Initiative, supporting academic exploration of blockchain technologies.
