In a landmark development in 2026, artificial intelligence has unearthed significant security vulnerabilities in XRP Ledger and Zcash, potentially impacting assets worth a staggering $190 billion. Coin Bureau has highlighted these discoveries as crucial breakthroughs in cryptocurrency security.
Decade-Long Vulnerability Detected in XRP Ledger
One of the most alarming revelations came from Veria Labs. Their AI-powered system identified an integer overflow bug in XRP Ledger’s payment engine, undetected since 2015. This flaw could have enabled the creation of 18.45 trillion XRP in a single transaction, surpassing XRP’s total supply by 184 times.
Veria Labs confirmed that this vulnerability could be reliably exploited to generate 18.45 trillion XRP every time. At the time of discovery, XRP’s market cap was approximately $94 billion. The XRP Ledger Foundation assured that no unauthorized tokens had been created, underscoring its role as a non-profit supporting the network’s development.
Coin Bureau stated, “AI has averted potential exploits on XRP and ZEC networks, safeguarding assets exceeding $190 billion in value.”
For this discovery, the Veria Labs team was awarded the maximum bug bounty of $250,000. This incident amplifies the growing importance of AI-based analysis alongside traditional code audits.
Signature Verification Process Flaw Encounters Spotlight
Earlier in 2026, Cantina AI’s autonomous scanning tool, Apex, identified a critical logic error within the proposed Batch modification for XRP Ledger. The flaw was embedded in the signature verification process, potentially allowing attackers to initiate bulk transactions from victim accounts without accessing private keys.
Hari Mulackal, CEO of Cantina and Spearbit, indicated that this security flaw directly endangered approximately $80 billion in assets. Validators ultimately rejected the proposed change, leading to an emergency patch deployment.
Hari Mulackal remarked, “The identified vulnerability posed an immediate risk to nearly $80 billion in assets.”
Unlimited Counterfeit ZEC Production Threat in Zcash
Renowned security researcher Taylor Hornby, utilizing Anthropic’s Claude Opus 4.8 model, conducted an audit of Zcash’s Orchard shielded pool. On May 29, Hornby discovered a flaw introduced in May 2022 that allowed attackers to generate unlimited, undetectable counterfeit ZEC.
Orchard, a structure designed to enhance transaction privacy in Zcash, was vulnerable under certain zero-knowledge proof settings. Following Hornby’s disclosure, a patch was released on June 2. The announcement led to a sharp decline in ZEC prices, though no confirmed exploits were reported.
AI’s Growing Influence on Network Operations
As security advancements unfold, AI-focused infrastructure adoption is expanding within the XRP ecosystem. The x402 protocol enables AI agents to facilitate automatic payments for API and computing services. XRP Ledger has processed over 10 million payments via x402, reaching this milestone less than three months after surpassing 1 million payments.
Ripple has joined the x402 Foundation as a Premier Member alongside Visa, Mastercard, Google, and Stripe. AI transactions now account for 25% of network operations, with the XRPL AI Hub listing 160 vendors and 2,276 live services.
