Where Were the Mining Operations?

Investigations led authorities to two distinct sites in Bukit Perpat, Hulu Terengganu, and Wakaf Tapai, Marang. The police confiscated 45 Bitcoin mining machines, valued at approximately $52,145. The equipment also included other tools used in these unauthorized mining setups.

What About Arrests?

The entire operation was conducted in collaboration with the Special Engagement Against Losses (SEAL) unit of Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB). Surprisingly, no arrests were made during the raid, although investigations are ongoing to identify those behind these illicit activities.

Chief of Police in Terengganu, Datuk Mohd Khairi Khairuddin, underscored the depth of the investigation aimed at uncovering illegal undertakings.

The seized equipment indicated an estimated monthly electricity theft of around $8,342, achieved by tapping into both residential and commercial power sources. Authorities are continuing their investigation to scrutinize broader illegal energy use.

Malaysia enforces tough laws on illegal usage of communication and energy infrastructures. Convicted offenders can face penalties including up to five years in prison and significant fines. Previous crackdowns have seen the termination of 985 illegal mining machines.

As the investigation proceeds, officials expect to deepen their understanding of the scope of these activities. They stress the importance of enhanced cooperation and regulatory improvements to curb unlawful practices.

Authorities in Malaysia are optimistic that this operation will serve as a deterrent against future illegal Bitcoin mining and related crimes in the region. They anticipate further breakthroughs in their investigations to ensure these activities are extinguished effectively.
