Cryptocurrency exchange Binance has issued a warning to its users about a scam technique known as address poisoning. The platform emphasized that not all crypto fraud involves wallet hijacking or private key theft; some attacks specifically exploit user errors.

What is Address Poisoning?Where Are These Attacks Occurring? What Precautions Does Binance Recommend?

What is Address Poisoning?

In address poisoning scams, fraudsters generate fake wallet addresses that closely resemble legitimate ones. The intention is to trick users into copying the wrong address from their transaction history. Given that blockchain transactions are irreversible, this simple mistake can redirect funds to the scammer’s wallet.

Binance pointed out that in an address poisoning attack, the attacker doesn’t need to seize control of a wallet or steal a private key; a user’s error in copying an address is sufficient.

Attackers often monitor wallets with frequent transactions, then create a fake address with a similar prefix and suffix to a regularly used address. They send a microtransaction or a zero-value transaction from this fake address to the target wallet, making it appear legitimate in the transaction history.

Where Are These Attacks Occurring?

Such attacks have been observed on networks like Ethereum and BNB Smart Chain, where wallet addresses are long and typically displayed in a shortened format. These blockchain networks are particularly susceptible to this type of deception.

Frequent traders and users with substantial balances are often targeted. When these users copy what they believe to be a trusted address from past transactions for a new transfer, they risk sending funds to a fraudulent address. Here, the scammer exploits not just technical loopholes but also user habits and inattentiveness.

What Precautions Does Binance Recommend?

Binance advises against relying solely on a wallet address’s truncated display. Users should verify the entire wallet address before a transaction, whitelist trusted addresses, and conduct a small test transfer before large transactions.

Ensuring the full address is checked, rather than simply trusting transaction history, is a basic step that helps mitigate the risk of address poisoning.

  • Blockchain transactions lack a refund mechanism, highlighting the importance of preventive measures.
  • Greatest caution is necessary when selecting addresses from past transaction records.
  • Frequent and inattentive use of addresses increases vulnerability to such scams.

Efficient preventative checks are critical in the cryptosphere due to the absence of a transaction reversal mechanism. Binance stresses that users need to exercise increased caution, especially when selecting addresses from previous transactions.
