Bitcoin‘s recent performance has been overshadowed by substantial withdrawals from spot Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs) and rising U.S. inflation figures. As of October 14, Bitcoin was trading at $81,000, coinciding with net outflows of $261.46 million from U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs. Additionally, Bitcoin mining companies investing in artificial intelligence infrastructure suffered significant stock declines.

Significant ETF Outflows & Market Responses

According to SoSoValue data, the ETF outflows were predominantly concentrated in funds managed by Fidelity and BlackRock. Fidelity’s FBTC fund experienced an outflow of $152.73 million, while BlackRock’s IBIT fund saw $110.94 million withdrawn. These outflows culminated in a combined total of $263.67 million. On the other hand, Bitwise’s BITB fund reported an inflow of $2.22 million, somewhat offsetting these losses. No significant activity was observed in Grayscale’s GBTC and BTC funds, or in ARK 21Shares’ ARKB fund.

The catalyst for market volatility was the U.S. inflation rate for September, which exceeded expectations at 3.7%, surpassing the 3.6% forecast. This upward pressure was partly driven by fuel price hikes related to Middle East unrest. Concerns about potential Fed tightening grew, with the probability of an October rate hike briefly surpassing 50% before retracting.

Interest rate concerns particularly affected Bitcoin miners investing in AI infrastructure. On October 14, TeraWulf saw a 12.64% drop, Core Scientific 12.44%, Cipher Mining 12.35%, and IREN 12.2%. Other companies like Riot Platforms, Bitdeer, Mara Holdings, and CleanSpark also faced selling pressures.

Market Trends and Economic Impact

The declines coincided with broader sell-offs in AI infrastructure firms. CoreWeave fell by approximately 16%, Nebius by 11%, and Oracle by 9%. Investors sold shares in companies increasing expenditures to leverage anticipated AI demand. High costs for data center setups and equipment acquisitions made debt-reliant firms more vulnerable to rising interest rates, impacting mining companies expanding into AI infrastructure.

These selling activities echoed across major U.S. indices. The S&P 500 dropped 1.11%, the largest daily loss since July 29. The Nasdaq Composite fell 1.88%, marking its worst daily performance since July 23, while the Dow Jones slipped by 0.09%.

Liquid Capital founder Jack Yi suggested a temporary continuation of Bitcoin’s decline could precede a swift recovery. On October 14, Yi highlighted on X that the support level of $81,000 had been clearly breached, shifting focus to identifying buying opportunities during the downturn.

Yi recalled advocating purchases during declines last July and August, expecting corrections by December. He emphasized sticking to pre-determined principles over short-term reactions.

Yi predicted Bitcoin’s next phase might mirror the bull run from three years ago, with potential for a new uptrend. He cautioned hesitant buyers against missing re-entry opportunities. Investors anticipating recovery were advised to avoid futures, as Yi preferred spot market plays for skilled investors, contemplating real-time spot transaction sharing on select platforms. He remarked, “Getting rich slowly is also an art.”

Arthur Hayes proposed a potential AI collapse could trigger a trillion-dollar market intervention, boosting Bitcoin and Ethereum prices. Uncertain about such a collapse, he positioned for potential intervention benefits through leading cryptocurrencies.
