The computational power of the Bitcoin network is on an upward trajectory, compensating for a decline experienced earlier this year. According to CryptoQuant data, as of October 22, 2026, the network’s actual hashrate has stabilized at 1,000 exahashes per second (EH/s), equivalent to 1 zettahash per second (ZH/s). This achievement is nearing the historical peaks seen at the end of 2025.

Mining Operations Intensify with Corporate Scale

Ki Young Ju, founder of CryptoQuant, notes that Bitcoin’s hashrate is climbing again as miners operate near full capacity. He highlighted a shift in the current cycle, where mining has evolved from a venture-driven activity to a heavy industry dominated by large corporate capital. CryptoQuant is renowned for providing on-chain data and market analyses.

Ki Young Ju, Bitcoin hashrate data is trending upward, with miners working near maximum capacity.

As network computational power increases, mining difficulty has also soared to a record high, reaching 140.58 trillion. The primary catalyst was the difficulty update on October 16, which marked a 5.92% rise, one of the most significant jumps in 2026. Another difficulty adjustment by the end of October is expected to bring an additional increase of 4% to 6%, indicating sustained new capacity influx and intensified competition.

Profit Margins Become More Selective

Mining companies listed on U.S. exchanges now control 35% to 40% of the global hashrate. These companies’ operational resilience is bolstered by direct investments from traditional financial entities.

With Bitcoin prices hovering between $80,000 and $83,000 and hashprice around $37 per petahash per day, mining remains viable only for businesses employing efficient equipment. Operations that leverage flagship ASIC devices with energy efficiency between 9 to 12 joules per terahash and electricity costs below $0.08 to $0.10 per kilowatt-hour gain a competitive edge.

Facilities using less efficient devices or incurring higher electricity costs may be forced out of the network. Consequently, the current growth is shaped more by well-capitalized players with strong balance sheets and lower costs, rather than a mere increase in total capacity.

Institutional Support Gains Prominence

Large mining pools have reduced their reliance on short-term fluctuations in BTC prices. Long-term contracts with institutional investors and partial adaptation of data center infrastructure for artificial intelligence needs provide an additional safeguard for the sector.

Ki Young Ju emphasized that higher hashrate levels enhance network security, and the backing of public miners by traditional financial giants signals an indirect institutional optimism.

With more than a year and a half to go until the next halving expected in April 2028, major players are afforded a temporary window for capacity expansion. However, maintaining this balance depends on the persistence of current price levels. A significant market correction could strain profit margins, testing the robustness of corporate capital.
