Fidelity’s Director of Global Macro, Jurrien Timmer, has weighed in on the ongoing preference shift in financial markets, highlighting a growing inclination towards Bitcoin over gold as market volatility increases. Although both assets have faced selling pressure recently, Timmer emphasized Bitcoin’s relative price resilience compared to gold.
Bitcoin Gains Upper Hand
In a reflective analysis shared on Platform X, Timmer expressed his continued preference for Bitcoin over gold in the short term. He noted that while both assets have experienced pullbacks, Bitcoin’s comparative strength stands out. This perspective reignites the debate about the divergence between gold, often seen as a safe haven, and Bitcoin, considered a growth-centric asset.
Timmer acknowledged, “For now, I prefer Bitcoin over gold, as Bitcoin’s relative price has held up better despite declines in both assets.”
Timmer previously observed that both Bitcoin and gold have been increasingly moving in tandem with equity markets. He remarked that this correlation has become more evident, especially during periods of risk aversion, as both assets have aligned with broader market trends in recent weeks.
Correlation with Equities Strengthens
Timmer reported that Bitcoin and gold have shown a correlation with the S&P 500 index ranging between 60% and 70% recently. This situation underscores how these two typically distinct assets can move in the same direction when macroeconomic pressures mount.
“Gold and Bitcoin have aligned more with stocks recently, showing a 60% to 70% correlation with the S&P 500,” Timmer noted.
This convergence in the market accentuates the importance for traders to monitor upcoming data releases closely. Such vigilance is crucial as Bitcoin’s connection to macroeconomic indicators deepens, revealing that its price movements stem not just from crypto-specific developments but broader economic factors as well. For those keen on real-time updates, platforms like CryptoAppsy offer simultaneous access to crypto news and macroeconomic data, easing the monitoring process.
Fed Expectations Influence Market Dynamics
Entering the weekend, the cryptocurrency market presented a mixed picture. Bitcoin dipped by 0.08% in the last 24 hours, settling at $75,904. Following robust employment figures, investors are revisiting their expectations for the Federal Reserve’s potential actions during its upcoming meeting.
The unemployment rate in the U.S. has decreased to 4.1%, pushing the likelihood of a quarter-point rate move at the Fed’s December 9 meeting to the forefront. The probability of such a move, reflected in Fed funds futures, surged from just over 66% to above 77% within a day.
Focus Shifts to Inflation Data
However, the inflation data set to be released next week remains a critical factor for shaping monetary policy views. Market participants will be closely watching the consumer price index and producer price index figures, alongside evaluating whether stability returns to equity markets. These factors will significantly influence the trajectory of risk-sensitive assets, including Bitcoin and gold.
In his analysis from mid-October 2024, Timmer also hinted at a potential new four-year bull cycle for Bitcoin. Drawing on power law patterns, he pointed out that while a compelling narrative has not yet emerged, bullish phases often begin without a clear storyline.
