Cryptocurrency ownership in Canada has seen a remarkable rise, with 25% of the population holding digital assets by 2026, a sharp increase from just 10% in 2023. This surge highlights a growing enthusiasm and awareness of cryptocurrencies among Canadians, according to a survey by the Ontario Securities Commission (OSC).

How Many Canadians Are Now Engaged with Digital Assets?

The OSC’s extensive survey, engaging 2,360 Canadians over the age of 18 during December 2025 to January 2026, revealed that 59% of participants are acquainted with crypto assets. Notably, one in four respondents reported owning cryptocurrencies, signifying a substantial boost in the engagement with digital coins over a span of three years.

Regulatory bodies observe that both curiosity and awareness about digital currencies have expanded, tracking the industry’s ongoing evolution. These developments suggest an increasing number of Canadians actively trading and managing cryptocurrencies.

Crypto markets continue to evolve, and Canadians are participating in them more than ever before. By identifying emerging trends and behaviors with our research, we can look around corners, anticipate potential opportunities and risks, and ensure our regulatory approach supports investor protection while fostering fair and efficient markets.

Despite this growing participation, the OSC’s report underscores limited widespread knowledge of regulatory frameworks and technological aspects among new users entering the crypto market.

Are Canadians Aware of Potential Risks Involved?

The study indicated that half of the cryptocurrency owners made an effort to verify the registration status of trading platforms before engaging in transactions. However, there is still prevalent misunderstanding concerning the extents of regulations, insurance provisions, and transactional capabilities of digital assets.

Although a section of investors is increasingly mindful of compliance and risk management, significant gaps remain, notably in understanding platform registration and fund protection against potential fraud or platform failures.

About 50% of crypto owners reported checking whether a platform was registered before using it, but many investors had some misunderstanding around regulation, insurance protections and transaction capabilities.

What Actions Are Lawmakers Taking?

Canadian policymakers are responding to these trends with new initiatives to address the dynamic role of cryptocurrencies in society. In April, a proposal was made to ban political donations using digital assets, aiming for greater transparency and fraud mitigation.

Further measures consider limitations on automated crypto teller machines due to potential illicit trade concerns. These legislative steps aim to find a balance between nurturing financial innovation and safeguarding consumer interests.

  • 25% of Canadians are projected to own cryptocurrencies in 2026.
  • Significant knowledge gaps remain in regulatory understanding among investors.
  • Proposed legislative measures focus on transparency and fraud prevention.

As Canada embraces cryptocurrencies for various uses such as investment and payment solutions, remaining updated on technological progress and regulatory shifts is crucial for both individuals and governing agencies alike.
