How Viable Are Sub-Penny Transactions? What is the x402 Standard?Field Trials and Test Network Engagements

Circle has unveiled its innovative Nanopayments system on the testnet, introducing gas-free USDC payments as minute as $0.000001. This development aligns with the company’s goal to support machine-to-machine transactions and the burgeoning economy driven by autonomous agents. By enabling scalable microtransactions, Nanopayments aims to facilitate applications such as pay-per-call APIs, billing for computing tasks, and rapid marketplace exchanges among autonomous entities.

How Viable Are Sub-Penny Transactions?

Legacy banks and existing blockchain systems have traditionally struggled with transactions below one cent, primarily due to their high processing and gas fees. Setting up a transaction for just $0.0001 often costs substantially more than the transaction value itself, creating inefficiencies and high costs for both developers and users.

To tackle these issues, Circle uses off-chain aggregation combined with on-chain batch settlements. Thousands of micropayments are collected and processed together, reducing per-transaction costs to nearly zero. Circle takes on all the gas fees at the settlement level, making the transactions completely fee-free at the user interfaces and developer endpoints.

What is the x402 Standard?

Circle’s Nanopayments incorporates the x402 standard, allowing autonomous devices and agents to make payments to merchants without needing to register accounts or enter credit card information. This framework seeks to simplify and expedite transaction flows among decentralized autonomous services, removing traditional onboarding costs and complications.

Circle highlighted their mission by stating, “The financial rail for the agentic economy is here,” showcasing their dedication to seamless, widespread transaction capabilities across diverse applications.

Field Trials and Test Network Engagements

Circle recently showcased the capabilities of its new payment method in collaboration with OpenMind, a developer of robotics software. For instance, an autonomous robotic dog was able to settle payment for its own energy use via USDC through the Nanopayments system. This allowed for immediate transaction approval and continuous operation, with blockchain settlement quietly occurring later.

As of February 2026, the Nanopayments system is active on the testnets of 12 blockchain networks, including Arbitrum, Base, and Ethereum, among others. Circle’s platform supports all EVM-compatible networks through its Gateway, offering developers a wide array of options for microtransaction applications.

Renowned for its USDC stablecoin, Circle is focusing its efforts on facilitating seamless microtransactions for business models depending on uninterrupted value transfers among both human and AI participants.

The ongoing testnet phase invites developers to explore and prove business models revolving around sub-cent and gas-free payments. This includes use cases like API-based services and billing for autonomous devices. While no mainnet adoption date has been released, Circle continues to position Nanopayments as a key component for agentic and automated commerce.
