The first half of 2026 has seen a worrying rise in physical attacks targeting cryptocurrency holders around the world, with new data from U.S.-based blockchain security firm CertiK revealing a 33.3% increase in incidents compared to the previous year. This increase translates into 52 confirmed attacks globally, with the total value at stake soaring to approximately $124.1 million. The surge highlights an alarming trend where criminals exploit physical vulnerabilities rather than technological ones, posing a growing threat to digital asset owners.

What Are Wrench Attacks?

Wrench attacks refer to incidents where aggressors employ violence, intimidation, or threats to force individuals into surrendering digital assets, divulging private keys, or unlocking digital wallets. These attacks sidestep advanced digital protections by focusing on physical intimidation.

“Incidents of violence, intimidation, and credible threats continue to challenge even those with robust digital security, as attackers focus on the individual rather than the system.”

The report indicates that a significant portion of the $124.1 million exposure value includes ransom payments, cash handed to attackers, and assets frozen by authorities. However, not all these funds were lost permanently.

Why Is France Leading in Europe?

France emerges as the epicenter of these threats in Europe, contributing 33 of the 39 cases from the continent. This stark increase highlights Europe as the most vulnerable region for cryptocurrency-related physical attacks. A noticeable rise in home invasions, which went from a singular report in early 2025 to 20 by mid-2026, underlines the growing risk.

  • Home invasions tied to cryptocurrency increased from 1 case in early 2025 to 20 in the same period of 2026.
  • Kidnapping instances related to crypto coercion rose from 12 to 16.
  • Torture-related cases were stable at four, and each period included one murder tied to crypto extortion.

The concentration of attacks in early 2026 suggests targeting patterns, with 35 incidents in the first quarter alone. Most notably, January recorded 15 attacks, March saw 13, and April experienced a rise to eight, compared to just two in the previous year. However, by May and June, the incident frequency declined, possibly due to improved personal security measures and intensified law enforcement efforts. Should the current trajectory persist, wrench attacks could total around 100 by the end of the year, though this prediction lacks formal backing.

Steps for Securing Digital Assets?

CertiK offers a range of protective measures for crypto holders. Disconnecting public identities from digital asset holdings remains crucial. High-value cryptocurrencies should be stored securely to prevent any one individual from accessing them alone. Additionally, home security should be enhanced, and families are advised to develop emergency action plans.

Staying secure extends to travel, where it’s recommended crypto holders avoid accessing sensitive accounts via mobile devices. By implementing these strategies, individuals can better protect themselves against the increasing threat of physical attacks on cryptocurrency owners.
