A series of coordinated fund transfers by a hacker involved in the Aztec Connect rollup breach has illuminated new tactics in crypto laundering. This individual has moved a total of 500 ETH into Tornado Cash, following on from a previous 300 ETH deposit. The approach indicates a deliberate strategy to obscure stolen assets from decentralized finance protocols.
What do irregular transfers suggest?
The hacker’s approach deviates from previous operations, characterized by methodical rather than swift fund flows. On August 8, a notable transfer of 300 ETH, equating to $572,100, was traced by PeckShield, marking an ongoing push into Tornado Cash. Earlier, on July 2, a transaction valued at 145 ETH ($227,650) was identified, accumulating to 200 ETH before recent developments.
This activity was spaced over more than a month, reflecting a strategic decision to disperse the disbursement of the pilfered 909 ETH. The attacker has moved just over half of the total hacked funds, utilizing a series of smaller transfers.

Where did the Aztec exploitation begin?
The incident stems from vulnerabilities in the Aztec Connect rollup contracts, which the hacker exploited on June 14, netting roughly $2.19 million. Included in the theft were 909 ETH, alongside various other cryptocurrencies. Soon after, the perpetrator extracted an additional $88,000 using similar tactics against outdated protocol components.
