As the U.S. dollar strengthens, Bitcoin faces increased selling pressure. Over the past 24 hours, Bitcoin has slid by 1.62%, trading around $82,490, with weekly losses reaching 4.61%. The market capitalization for the leading cryptocurrency is estimated at approximately $1.65 trillion.
Dollar Index Strengthens Amid Global Economic Shifts
The Dollar Index (DXY), which tracks the U.S. dollar against six major currencies, surpassed the 102.50 mark, marking its highest level in 18 months. This elevation is creating pressure on currencies, particularly in economies heavily reliant on oil imports. The weakness in Europe and Japan further supports the dollar’s upward momentum.
Expectations that the Federal Reserve might maintain a tighter monetary policy have fueled demand for the dollar. Cleveland Fed President Beth Hammack voiced the necessity for restrictive monetary measures to cool the broad-based inflation pressure.
Beth Hammack emphasized the need for restrictive monetary policy to curb the spread of inflation.
Markets are now keenly focused on the upcoming U.S. consumer inflation data due on Wednesday, which has the potential to reshape expectations about the Fed’s future policy directions.
Weak Demand Signals Persist for Bitcoin
Bitcoin has pulled back from levels above $84,200 to around $82,460. The persistence of a lower-high and lower-low price structure indicates weak buying appetite. In derivative markets, aggressively opened short positions highlight insufficient spot market demand.
The relationship between the dollar and Bitcoin is not always inversely proportional, but a strong dollar trend can squeeze the space for risky assets to thrive. This scenario has complicated Bitcoin’s prospects for a robust upward move.
Derivatives Data Reinforce Selling Pressure
Data from CoinGlass reveals increased activity in derivatives markets as Bitcoin’s price has declined. In the last 24 hours, Bitcoin futures trading volume hit $43.55 billion, while the size of open positions held steady at $52.25 billion. This scenario suggests that leveraged trades are still significantly influential in the market. CoinGlass is known for providing detailed cryptocurrency derivatives data and liquidation statistics.
During this period, total Bitcoin liquidations reached $54.76 million. Of this amount, $43.22 million stemmed from long positions, while $11.54 million came from short positions. Thus, approximately 79% of total liquidations occurred among investors holding bullish positions.
The concentration of liquidations in long positions indicates that leveraged buyers are under pressure.
