Ethereum Moves Toward Layer-2 Centric Strategy with Buterin’s Encouragement

Recently, Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin spoke at the ETH Global’s Pragma London event, signaling a substantial shift in Ethereum’s future direction. The successful integration of the Dencun upgrade heralds this new era, promising to enhance network scalability by reducing cryptographic proof costs for Layer-2 (L2) rollups. Buterin, addressing attendees, articulated the network’s achievement of fundamental rollup scaling while emphasizing the need for ongoing work to boost activity.

Ethereum Gathers Momentum for Enhanced Scalability

Buterin’s speech, delivered to an audience of over 500 before a hackathon, was a highly anticipated focal point of the day. Attendees were eager to learn the future steps for Ethereum, especially from one of its key visionaries following the smooth integration of Dencun into the mainnet.

Technological Innovations with Dencun Upgrade

Since The Merge in 2022, which marked Ethereum’s switch to a proof-of-stake consensus, the network has followed Buterin’s outlined roadmap. He noted that many of the goals involved engineering feats, with several already showing positive outcomes. The Dencun upgrade brought Ethereum Improvement Proposal EIP-4844, reforming how rollups store data on the mainnet and introducing a cost-effective method for adding data to blocks through ‘blob space’ instead of call data. This proto-danksharding technique reduces the load on Ethereum nodes and auto-deletes the data after 18 days.

Outlook on Ethereum’s Evolution

Buterin reflected on Ethereum’s past decade of introspective growth, where it aimed to satisfy technology enthusiasts. Looking ahead, he envisions the next decade as a period where Ethereum should have a global impact. With the recent upgrade, Ethereum is expected to focus more on maintenance rather than drastic changes to its base layer. Buterin suggests that application developers pivot to a Layer-2 centric mindset, utilizing tools such as zero-knowledge proofs to create scalable and privacy-protecting applications. Additionally, he encourages the adoption of an “Ethereum 2.0” development strategy that takes advantage of the latest protocols for privacy, security, and performance enhancements.
