Vitalik Buterin, a prominent figure in the blockchain world, has underscored the necessity of advancing Ethereum’s mainnet to ensure its sustainability in the future. While layer-2 solutions have become less captivating over time, Ethereum is consistently growing more rapid and affordable. Introducing a new strategy, the Strawmap roadmap, promises to further propel these improvements at a faster pace.

What Are Ethereum’s New Core Objectives?

Earlier this year, the Ethereum Foundation unveiled an updated roadmap titled “Strawmap”. This plan enumerates five ambitious goals aimed at transforming Ethereum into the quintessential “scalable, secure, and private world computer.” These aims focus on major protocol upgrades, signifying the beginning of a new chapter for Ethereum.

Can Mainnet Speed Match User Demand?

Central to the Strawmap is the objective of increasing Ethereum’s mainnet efficiency. The Fast L1 initiative aims to significantly cut down transaction finality times through technologies like Single Slot Finality. With potential slot reductions to under eight seconds, users could experience near-immediate transaction confirmations, boosting layer-1’s utility.

Another significant aim is to enhance the network’s processing capability to one billion gas per second, dubbed as Gigagas L1. The incorporation of built-in zkEVMs will unlock processing speeds soaring to approximately 10,000 transactions per second, without necessitating hardware upgrades for participants.

How Will Security and Privacy Evolve?

In terms of scalability, the platform aims for a network-wide capacity of one teragas per second on layer-2s. Innovations like PeerDAS are expected to expand Ethereum’s data layer, potentially lowering the operational costs for decentralized applications operating on layer-2s.

The roadmap also sheds light on enhancing security with a focus on quantum resistance, labeled Post Quantum L1. As quantum computing advances, Ethereum plans to transition from traditional ECDSA signatures to quantum-resistant algorithms. This proactive measure aims to protect the network from possible quantum threats looming over blockchain technology.

Another notable element of this roadmap is privacy enhancement. The Private L1 initiative aspires to integrate privacy into the core Ethereum protocol using technologies like shielded ETH transactions, enabling balance and transaction anonymity while maintaining decentralization.

By streamlining its development stages into three focused streams—Scale, Improve UX, and Harden L1—Ethereum is preparing for significant upgrades in 2026. Notably, the Glamsterdam update is set for early 2026, followed by the Hegotá upgrade in the latter half.

“While ETH has yet to reclaim the critical $2,100 level, it continues to post strong double-digit daily gains.”

Ethereum’s progressive strategies underscore its commitment to maintaining a cutting-edge blockchain ecosystem, endeavoring to address scalability, security, and privacy challenges comprehensively, thus paving the way for its bright future in the digital world.
