A recent warning from Ethereum researchers claiming that artificial intelligence could potentially crack the cryptographic signatures protecting Bitcoin and Ethereum wallets within months has sparked debate across the cryptocurrency sector. This alarm raises the possibility that current cryptographic structures might be pressured even before the mainstream adoption of quantum computers.
Back Criticizes Ethereum’s Architectural Decisions
In response to the discussions, Adam Back, CEO of Blockstream, took to X, sharply criticizing Ethereum’s initial architectural choices. He argued that despite warnings, Ethereum’s early developers chose to reconstruct around a patently problematic framework.
Blockstream is renowned for developing Bitcoin-focused infrastructure and financial technology products, while Back himself is a prominent figure in cryptography and has played a significant early role in the Bitcoin ecosystem.
Adam Back asserted that Satoshi Nakamoto’s selection of the UTXO model for the BTC network indicated a deeper understanding of distributed systems and peer-to-peer network design.
According to Back, the UTXO model used by Bitcoin’s pseudonymous creator Satoshi Nakamoto offers a more suitable foundation for the functioning of distributed systems. In this model, unspent transaction outputs are individually tracked, consuming current outputs and generating new ones with each transaction. Networks like Bitcoin and Cardano utilize this structure.
Ethereum’s Experimental Explorations Continue
In contrast, Ethereum employs an account-based model, which maintains persistent balances and state information for users and smart contracts, updating these records directly with each transaction. Nevertheless, Ethereum researchers are working on experimental frameworks that could incorporate optional UTXO-like features.
Among the proposals gaining attention is EIP 8141. The draft highlights a new transaction structure—Frame Transactions—geared towards native account abstraction and post-quantum preparedness.
AI Concerns Elevate Wallet Security Focus
Ethereum researcher Justin Drake suggested on Wednesday that the cryptocurrency sector should prepare for a state of heightened caution. Drake warned that in a worst-case scenario, artificial intelligence could develop methods to breach the mathematical structures protecting Bitcoin and Ethereum wallets within months.
Vitalik Buterin emphasized that while no one should panic and rush to move their assets to new wallets today, it is crucial to take the mathematical risks accelerated by AI developments seriously.
Drake particularly advised large asset holders to start gradually migrating their funds to new addresses. However, Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin advocated for a more cautious approach. Buterin did not recommend immediate transitions to new wallets but stressed the importance of not underestimating the pressure AI-driven mathematical advances could exert on cryptography.
