Ethereum developers have finalized plans for the Glamsterdam hard fork, a pivotal network update projected for the latter half of 2026. This significant upgrade is anticipated to enhance the network’s core capabilities, offering improvements for validators, developers, and decentralized applications alike. Glamsterdam is poised as a landmark shift since the renowned Merge update.

What Will the Glamsterdam Upgrade Focus On?

The main focus of Glamsterdam lies in transforming the block validation processes, marking it distinctly from previous upgrades. These comprehensive preparations entail vast changes across both execution and consensus layers. According to prominent commentator Crypto With Gopal, Ethereum is swiftly advancing towards a new horizon of scalability.

What Are EIP 7732 and EIP 7928?

EIP 7732 intends to separate the roles of block production and validation, aiming to empower validators in block creation. This initiative is expected to streamline network functionality and lessen the reliance on external block builders.

In contrast, EIP 7928 seeks to enforce block-level access lists, which could facilitate quicker transaction processing and possibly lower gas fees. Essentially, gas fees refer to the baseline costs associated with executing transactions or smart contracts on Ethereum.

According to the Ethereum Foundation, Glamsterdam is designed to expand Layer 1 capacity and create a more favorable environment for validators, developers, and decentralized applications on the network.

What Does the New Batch of EIPs Entail?

The upcoming devnet release is set to incorporate ten fresh EIPs, including EIP 7708, which devises a novel framework for ETH transfer logs, and EIP 7954, which amplifies the size cap for smart contracts from 24 KiB to 64 KiB.

Other planned enhancements target diverse aspects such as gas measurement, call data management, opcode setup, and state control dynamics. Meanwhile, additional proposals are still under scrutiny, although EIP 7904 seems unlikely to be approved.

  • Separation of block production and validation is expected to enhance efficiency.
  • Mandatory block-level access lists may expedite transactions and decrease costs.
  • New EIPs will provide foundation changes, including larger smart contract allowances.

The Upgrade’s Effects on Ethereum Users

Ethereum’s revised roadmap highlights its adaptive strategy in response to increasing use and application deployments. The enhancements potentially simplify developers’ deployment processes, offering efficiency and cost-saving advantages. Validators will likely experience quicker block creation, potentially benefiting users with more consistent fee expectations.

While Glamsterdam signals Ethereum’s commitment to a post-Merge future, it also underlines the network’s goal of achieving higher efficiency and broader scalability across its foundational infrastructure.

With over a year left until Glamsterdam’s full launch, Ethereum’s strategic roadmap is focused on refining block validation techniques, signaling its dedication to scaling and improving network capabilities in the years to come.
