Meta, once known as Facebook, is steering its metaverse ambitions toward mobile platforms, signaling a notable shift in strategy. Previously committed to a virtual reality (VR)-centric approach, the company is now modifying its focus to include a more expansive mobile reach.
Why Was the VR Strategy Reconsidered?
Originally, Meta intended to phase out its Horizon Worlds platform on Quest VR headsets by the end of March. Yet, facing fervent opposition from VR enthusiasts who argued that mobile solutions lack the depth of VR experiences, the company opted to maintain its VR offerings. This decision reflects the potent influence of user feedback on tech plans.
What Is the New Focus for Meta?
Andrew Bosworth, Meta’s Chief Technology Officer, stated that Horizon Worlds will keep supporting existing VR content but will not see new VR projects in the future. Instead, the company’s innovation efforts are veering towards mobile development.
Bosworth explained the company’s revised plan:
We have decided to keep Horizon Worlds operational for current VR games, but our new content plans are focused on mobile platforms.
The underperformance of Reality Labs, Meta’s metaverse unit, underpins this strategic pivot. Since its inception in 2020, Reality Labs has suffered losses upwards of $80 billion, necessitating a reevaluation of goals. These financial strains are prompting Meta to reallocate efforts into mobile expansion.
Company figures concede that returns from metaverse projects have been slower than anticipated. Hence, shifting to mobile provides an avenue for capturing a more extensive user audience with tangible outcomes. This move aligns with recent workforce reductions in Reality Labs, where approximately 1,500 metaverse-focused jobs were cut.
Samantha Ryan, a Meta content leader, has pointed out the growing success that Horizon Worlds has enjoyed on mobile, strengthening Meta’s resolved direction.
Even as Meta remains engaged with VR possibilities, its pragmatic adjustment underscores a growing priority for broad, accessible mobile engagement. This strategy is both a reflection of and a response to the shifting dynamics of the metaverse industry.
