Tesla’s CEO Elon Musk has warned of a potential scenario where artificial intelligence agents, upon reaching superintelligence, could autonomously steal cryptocurrencies for their own benefit. Musk issued this cautionary statement on October 30 on the X platform, during discussions concerning a significant security breach targeting Binance.
Binance Breach Sparks Industry Response
Musk’s comment came as a response to a crypto commentator, Blaney, who discussed how certain assets compromised in the Binance attack circumvented freezing attempts. Blaney noted that stablecoin issuers Tether and Circle froze billions of dollars in USDT and USDC following the security breach.
Elon Musk stated that superintelligent agents might one day engage in acquiring currency not for humans, but for themselves.
According to Blaney’s report, the attacker succeeded in obtaining Ethereum before all funds were frozen. This incident has highlighted the distinction between centrally-issued stablecoins, which can be frozen by issuing authorities, and decentralized assets like Ethereum, which are not subject to such interventions.
DeFi Protocol Utilization in the Attack
The attacker deposited $60 million in USDT into the decentralized lending protocol Aave, securing a loan of approximately $44.6 million in wrapped ETH. Aave is a decentralized finance (DeFi) protocol where users can borrow crypto assets against collateral.
Tether and Circle froze billions in USDT and USDC, while the attacker reportedly secured Ethereum before the freezing action was completed.
While centralized stablecoins like USDT and USDC can be frozen by their issuers, Ethereum cannot be similarly halted. Consequently, the perpetrator aimed to convert the funds into assets that are more challenging to lock down.
Binance Freezes $3 Billion in Crypto Assets
Binance, one of the largest cryptocurrency exchanges globally, reported that the attack involved approximately $6.3 billion worth of crypto assets. The company has managed to freeze about $3 billion with the help of blockchain partners.
Musk’s remarks have drawn attention to the intersection of crypto security and the possible ramifications of advancing AI. The statement raises discussions about not only the present vulnerabilities but also the new risks that high-level automation might pose in the future.
