New insights into OpenAI’s revenue forecasts have assuaged concerns about the lofty valuations of tech firms, spurring a rally in global markets. U.S. stock futures and Asian shares climbed higher, buoyed by a decline in bond yields that has also supported gold prices. Meanwhile, Brent crude oil prices fell on anticipation of eased tensions in the Middle East.
Tech Stocks Gain on OpenAI’s Optimism
The S&P 500 futures rose by 0.3%, while Nasdaq 100 futures edged up 0.5%. Asian markets also gained 0.3%, with European bourses expected to open on a positive note. OpenAI has expressed that with the backing of its growing enterprise operations, it anticipates its annualized revenue to reach or surpass $70 billion by year-end. This outlook has alleviated some of the concerns regarding the growth rate of the artificial intelligence sector.
After a downturn on Thursday, recovery followed in the wake of revelations that OpenAI’s annualized revenue fell short by $20 billion from previously stated levels, triggering a sell-off in tech stocks and a 3.4% drop in chipmakers’ shares.
Nevertheless, investors continue to evaluate whether AI companies can maintain their rapid growth and generate revenues that support their high valuations. The annualized revenue metrics put forth by companies like OpenAI and Anthropic remain central to this analysis.
Oil Declines as Gold and Bonds Rally
Brent crude dropped by 1.2%, settling at $102.95 a barrel, following a statement by U.S. President Donald Trump confirming there would be no attack on Iran before the November midterm elections. This announcement lessened the perceived risk of conflict in the Middle East, impacting energy and currency markets.
U.S. Treasury yields, which began rising in the previous session, continued their ascent as the dollar weakened. The retreat of long-term U.S. Treasury yields from their two-decade highs has supported a 1.1% rise in gold, bringing its price to approximately $4,175 per ounce.
In Japan, the yield on the 10-year government bond fell by 5.5 basis points to 3.025%. Optimism surrounding the Middle East boosted Asian currencies against the dollar, with the Chinese yuan also strengthening.
China’s central bank has refuted allegations of undervaluing the yuan, ahead of trade talks with the European Union. In Europe, there is growing concern over currency imbalances and trade deficits.
Despite market upswings, the sustainability of investments in artificial intelligence and whether the sector can yield adequate returns remains a focal point for investors.
