Petrobras, the state-controlled energy giant of Brazil, has unveiled two cutting-edge blockchain applications built on the Cardano platform, aiming to streamline the tracking of low-carbon fuels. These applications primarily focus on Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) and the renewable-content Diesel R product, marking a significant move towards enhancing transparency and efficiency in fuel monitoring.
Blockchain Adoption in Fuel Tracking Expands
The Cardano Foundation revealed that these projects were developed in collaboration with Petrobras and Ledger Labs, a blockchain research center at the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro. Known for its commitment to advancing the Cardano ecosystem, the Cardano Foundation focuses on promoting the network’s enterprise applications.
The first application is designed to validate claims on the environmental benefits associated with specified quantities of sustainable aviation fuel. The Cardano network plays a pivotal role in creating an auditable record of these claims. The process begins with certificates assessed against CORSIA and other standards, after which the attributes of these certificates are tokenized.
Cardano’s network will underpin the traceable recording of environmental benefit rights associated with sustainable aviation fuel.
These tokens can subsequently be allocated to airlines or individual journeys, enabling clearer tracking of the chain of custody for the environmental characteristics linked to specific fuel volumes.
Second Application Integrates Data from Production to Usage
The second application aggregates data generated at different stages of the fuel lifecycle into a single structure. This system connects the production, transportation, and end-use phases of renewable fuel, aiming to enhance data integrity throughout the process.
The new system links data from the production to the final usage of renewable fuel.
Ongoing Collaboration Between Petrobras and Cardano
This initiative is an extension of previous collaborations between Petrobras and Cardano, first publicly announced in December 2023. The initial focus was on education, introducing Petrobras employees to blockchain concepts and exploring enterprise use cases.
Petrobras stands out as the first Forbes 500 company to utilize Cardano’s infrastructure. The company has previously tested Cardano technology in internal administrative processes. The latest announcement, however, did not indicate that ADA, Cardano’s native cryptocurrency, is being adopted as a payment method. Still, the use of Cardano’s blockchain in the infrastructure of a large-scale energy company is a noteworthy development.
As per the latest data, Cardano’s native asset ADA is trading at approximately $0.245. According to CoinGecko, its market capitalization is around $9.3 billion.
