Polygon’s zkEVM Mainnet Beta Resumes After Technical Halt

Polygon’s zkEVM Mainnet Beta, powered by the MATIC token, recently faced a temporary shutdown lasting around ten hours due to a sequencer issue linked to Layer 1 network reorganization. Despite the hiccup, the platform’s Emergency Council for Polygon zkEVM Mainnet Beta quickly intervened with a fix, allowing for the resumption of services. An in-depth report on the matter is set to be released soon.

Swift Response to Network Disruption

The disruption, which was specific to the zkEVM Mainnet Beta and did not extend to other systems such as Polygon PoS or CDK, was swiftly addressed. The core team, with guidance from the Emergency Council, implemented fixes that restored network functionality without further impacting operations.

Post-recovery, the network’s emergency mode was deactivated, and a new protocol was introduced, mandating a 10-day waiting period for all future system updates. This measure is aimed at ensuring thorough assessment and minimizing the risks of unforeseen issues.

The Polygon team has committed to transparency and plans to provide a detailed account of the outage. They will outline the steps taken to mitigate the issue and share insights into operational protocols and strategic initiatives moving forward.

Debate Over Layer 2 Solutions Intensifies

This event has reignited conversations surrounding the security and scalability of Layer 2 solutions within the crypto community. Polygon developer Jarrod Watts highlighted the critical role of Layer 2 in advancing scalability while also stressing the importance of vigilant development to support upgrades and reinforce security measures.

Although acknowledging the inherent risks, Watts pointed out the necessity for ongoing innovation. He also addressed the community’s concerns regarding the possibility of harmful updates and the discussions around the centralization of Layer 2 networks as compared to some Layer 1 counterparts.
