Sei Network Warns of Critical Transition for USDC Holders

The Sei Network has recently urged its users holding USDC.n, a stablecoin variant, to shift to the ‘native USDC’ due to an impending protocol update. Scheduled for March, this significant upgrade, known as SIP-3, will overhaul the existing system, significantly impacting users with assets in the outdated stablecoin version. With network data showing a rapid decrease in USDC via Noble balances on Sei, there is growing concern among investors about potential risks concerning access and asset value.

The End of USDC.n on Sei Network

The network revealed that once the SIP-3 upgrade is implemented, USDC.n—originally bridged through Noble—may no longer be operational. Initially serving as Sei’s primary stablecoin, it has been outmoded since Circle began issuing native USDC directly on Sei’s network. This transition underscores a significant shift in stablecoin infrastructure management.

Reports indicate that the existing USDC.n balance on the Sei platform plummeted to around $1.4 million, from previous higher figures. This stark drop suggests a clear migration toward Sei’s ‘canonical’ USDC version. Project leaders have warned about the risks of USDC.n becoming both inaccessible and devalued once SIP-3 is live.

For those adjusting during this period, Sei has suggested using DragonSwap and Symphony platforms for smaller transactions. Meanwhile, they recommend a more intricate method for larger transactions, involving moving assets from Noble to Polygon, then back to Sei via Circle’s CCTP method.

How Will the SIP-3 Upgrade Influence Stablecoin Operations?

The upcoming SIP-3 upgrade is designed to transition Sei to an EVM-compatible chain, phasing out support for CosmWasm and Cosmos-based native assets. Although this adaptation simplifies Sei’s technical setup, it poses significant adjustments for Cosmos-linked assets.

Noble, a crucial component for USDC.n, primarily acts as an asset issuance bridge for networks within the Cosmos/IBC ecosystem. It supports numerous issuers, including Circle, Hashnote Labs, Monerium, and Ondo Finance, in integrating their assets with Cosmos-based systems.

“The transition to a new infrastructure is prompted by our aim to streamline operations and enhance system compatibility,” noted a spokesperson from Sei Network.

Key takeaways from this transition include:

  • The necessity for USDC.n holders to transition promptly to mitigate exposure to risks associated with the upgrade.
  • Greater emphasis on native assets issued directly via Circle, reflecting a shift in the strategic direction of Sei’s ecosystem.
  • The role of intermediary platforms in facilitating seamless transitions for different transaction scales.

As Sei Network prepares for this transformative phase, the attention to detail and proactive guidance provided will be crucial for users. This marks an important step in the network’s evolution, emphasizing the importance for users to remain vigilant and flexible during technological transitions.
