S&P Dow Jones Indices has executed its inaugural on-chain transaction by transferring an over-the-counter total return swap agreement to the distributed ledger infrastructure of the Canton Network. This pioneering transaction was completed at the beginning of the month on a network augmented with Ripple Custody support.
Institutional Involvement Marks First Transaction
The transaction was facilitated between market maker DRW and financial group Marex via the Derivnex platform, highlighting the use of a fully-tokenized index within such a framework for the first time. The iBoxx USD Liquid Investment Grade Index served as the underlying data, distributed on the network by Kaiko.
Renowned for calculating and licensing extensively used indexes in the global markets, S&P Dow Jones Indices is setting a new precedent for how traditional financial products can be processed on closed blockchain infrastructures.
“The market for non-collateralized OTC derivatives is significant, and this transaction allowed Marex and DRW to operate on an immutable record, simplifying operational flow,” said Don Wilson, Founder and CEO of DRW.
Streamlined Settlement with a Single Interface
All stages of the derivative product’s lifecycle were managed through a single blockchain interface based on the standards of the International Swaps and Derivatives Association (ISDA), eliminating the need for manual data reconciliation. Participants anticipate managing cash settlements and collateral directly on the Canton Network in the future.
Glossary: A total return swap is a derivative contract through which the total return of an asset, including price changes and cash flows, is exchanged between parties. The ISDA sets contract standards for the global derivatives market.
Ripple Integration Facilitates Institutional Access
S&P’s engagement with the Canton Network coincided with a software update for network participants. The 1.43 version of Ripple Custody, which was released on October 5, integrated Canton support. Despite operating as an isolated system, this integration provides banks and institutional participants with a new channel for managing positions.
Major institutions can now store and transfer Canton Coin and CIP 56 assets via Ripple software. The validator infrastructure remains under clients’ control while signature keys are retained in their vaults.
The Canton Network is not positioned as part of the Ripple ecosystem; transactions do not involve XRP, XRPL, or RLUSD.
Market Remains Cautious Amid Developments
In the retail crypto sector, the development was met with caution. Some decentralization proponents contend that Canton, designed as a private interbank network, does not constitute a “real blockchain.”
Nevertheless, the scope of the technical partnership remains limited. While Canton preserves its structural independence, Ripple acts as a custodial and access layer for this network. This arrangement enables Wall Street institutions to conduct digital capital market transactions within a closed infrastructure, bypassing public networks.
