A pioneering method titled Quantum Safe Bitcoin (QSB) has been proposed to protect Bitcoin transactions from potential quantum computing threats. This approach, detailed by Avihu Levy of StarkWare, promises substantial safety without the need for significant modifications to Bitcoin’s existing framework.

What vulnerabilities does QSB address?

QSB targets the vulnerabilities of Bitcoin’s reliance on elliptic curve digital signatures (ECDSA), which could be compromised by future quantum algorithms capable of solving complex mathematical problems more efficiently. This could endanger the integrity of Bitcoin transactions.

Shifting away from sole reliance on elliptic curves, the QSB scheme emphasizes hash-based strategies. By doing so, ECDSA remains a verifying tool while the core security shifts to hash pre-image challenges, ensuring resistance to quantum breakthroughs.

How will the new system work?

A significant component of QSB involves a “hash-to-signature” method, whereby public keys are processed through RIPEMD-160 hashes to generate valid ECDSA signatures. This creates a difficulty comparable to existing proof-of-work tasks, enhancing security comprehensively.

Leveraging properties of cryptographic hashes, the QSB design nullifies potential exploitation by algorithms like Shor’s and only allows for moderate speed gains via Grover’s algorithm. This facilitates substantial safety margins, preserving Bitcoin’s security amid quantum advances.

The proposed method harmonizes with Bitcoin’s scripting constraints without requiring disruptive protocol enhancements or soft forks. This aspect is likely to be positively received by developers who prioritize network stability.

Despite these strengths, QSB transactions are hampered by their size, surpassing standard relay limits and requiring miners’ direct involvement. Additionally, creating valid QSB transactions is computationally expensive, demanding significant cloud resources and time.

Avihu Levy highlighted that this design aims to enhance quantum resilience for Bitcoin without necessitating contentious upgrades, aiming to stimulate further research in the field of hash-based cryptography on established blockchain systems.
