In a significant development, the U.S. government has transferred cryptocurrency assets valued at approximately $565.87 million to Coinbase Prime within a few hours. Onchain Lens, a blockchain data provider, disclosed that a substantial portion of these assets was confiscated in connection with the 2016 Bitfinex hack and the collapse of FTX and Alameda Research.

Bitcoin Dominates Massive Transfers

The largest movement included a transfer of 3,974 Bitcoins, which was estimated to be worth $329.95 million. These Bitcoins were identified by Onchain Lens as assets linked to the infamous Bitfinex hack. A subsequent transaction involved the transfer of 657.92 BTC, 750.19 Wrapped Bitcoin (WBTC), and $24.89 million in Tether (USDT), with a total value of approximately $141.77 million. This was followed by another transfer of $94.15 million in USDT to Coinbase Prime.

Onchain Lens remarked that a portion of the assets routed to Coinbase Prime originated from newly created addresses, with a significant amount tied to assets from the Bitfinex hack.

Bitfinex Hack Resurfaces in Crypto Conversations

The transactions prominently featured assets associated with Bitcoin stolen in the 2016 Bitfinex security breach. During that incident in August 2016, hackers made off with roughly 119,754 BTC from the cryptocurrency exchange. U.S. authorities later regained access to over 94,000 BTC after obtaining the private keys of the accused hacker, Ilya Lichtenstein, resulting in a recovery valued at approximately $3.6 billion in 2022. Lichtenstein ultimately pleaded guilty to charges of conspiracy to commit money laundering.

Bitfinex, a well-established cryptocurrency exchange, faced one of the most notorious security lapses in the industry’s history during that hack, repositioning its security protocols ever since.

Transfer to Coinbase Prime Not Necessarily a Sell Signal

The movement of these assets to Coinbase Prime does not automatically imply an imminent sale. Operating as a platform for institutional clients, Coinbase Prime provides custody and advanced trading infrastructure services. In 2024, the U.S. Marshals Service selected Coinbase Prime to facilitate custody and transaction services for its substantial digital asset portfolio.

Such transfers from government wallets can occasionally serve operational management, custody purposes, or adjustments in portfolio composition. However, no official explanation has been provided regarding the objective behind these latest transactions.

The U.S. government has not disclosed any public rationale for these transactions.

Notably, some assets were moved through newly generated addresses, a point of interest for observers. Nonetheless, this on-chain movement alone does not necessarily indicate preparations for a sale. The current undeniable fact is the relocation of sizeable amounts of seized digital assets to Coinbase Prime’s infrastructure.
