What is the Role of Solo Mining and CKpool? Is Solo Mining a Rare Success Story?

A lone bitcoin miner has defied expectations by claiming a block reward worth roughly $210,000 using only modest computing capabilities. This significant accomplishment was achieved with a processing power of approximately 230 terahashes per second, validating block number 943,411. This is in stark contrast to the entirety of bitcoin’s network, which boasts a capacity nearing one zetahash per second.

What is the Role of Solo Mining and CKpool?

The successful miner utilized solo.ckpool.org, which has been operational since 2014. This platform allows miners to earn a full block reward minus a 2% fee. Developer Con Kolivas, who is behind CKpool, shared details of this achievement on social media, revealing that with the miner’s level of hashrate, the chance of success was 1 in 28,000 daily.

The mining setup could be easily replicated with a few ASIC devices, signaling a victory not born from colossal data centers, but from a small-scale operation, likely managed at home. This underlines the potential for individual miners to succeed without vast computational resources.

Is Solo Mining a Rare Success Story?

Yes, the recent event signifies the 312th solo block secured through CKpool. Prior to this, no solo blocks had been validated for 33 days, with the preceding success occurring at the end of February. Over the past year, solo miners managed to validate only 20 blocks, distributing a total of 62.96 BTC rewards.

On average, solo blocks are discovered roughly every 19 days. However, a notable hiatus extended to 58 days without any rewards. These one-off successes have been notable enough to capture headlines. In December, for instance, a miner with 270 terahashes per second secured a block and a reward nearly reaching $285,000. November witnessed another astonishing win when a much older 6-terahash device cracked a block under difficult odds, earning about $265,000.

At February’s end, even a rented device with 1 petahash power snagged a reward of almost $200,000, incurring minimal operational costs.

– Solo miners using CKpool have validated 20 blocks in a year.

– A miner operating at 6 terahashes achieved a reward against 180 million-to-one odds.

– Large mining companies’ power is 130,000 times that of the celebrated solo miner.

Kolivas highlighted these rare wins to affirm the underlying potential for solo miners, reflecting the mathematical possibility of success despite the predominance of highly resourced operations. This underscores the broader accessibility of bitcoin mining as a pursuit, retaining a glimmer of hope for independent miners.
