Sunny Lu, the co-founder and CEO of VeChain, has articulated a transformative vision where artificial intelligence agents, operating autonomously around the clock, could ignite the next wave of blockchain adoption. According to Lu, these agents will necessitate a new system of accountability grounded in identity and reputation verification to foster public trust.
Elevating Identity and Reputation in AI Ecosystems
Lu shared these insights while discussing VeChain’s agent development platform, VeWorld.ai. He foresees a decentralized trust system where AI agents possess digital passports, allowing for the monitoring of both the agents’ and their creators’ reputations. This framework aims to establish a secure and transparent environment for autonomous operations.
In this context, smart contracts could play a pivotal role in finalizing transactions either between agents or between agents and humans, positioning blockchain not only as a data storage layer but also as an essential scaffold for trust and verification.
Sunny Lu emphasizes, “For AI agents to gain societal trust, there is a pressing need for a novel accountability system that integrates identity and reputation.”
AI Agents as Catalysts for New Business Models
Lu argues that AI agents could be instrumental in transforming individual expertise into income-generating services. This perspective opens software development opportunities to not only programmers but also to those with professional expertise, local knowledge, or hobbyist skills.
Drawing a parallel to the economic shift created by mobile app stores, Lu envisions agent creation tools fostering a similar economic ecosystem. This development would empower non-coders to convert their knowledge into a product or service.
Lu cited various examples, such as an educational agent developed for his daughter, an agent aiding his mother’s daily routine and recovery process, and a virtual worker managing procurement, stock, sales, and operations for a boutique in Milan.
A Cautious Industry Perspective Remains
VeChain has previously aimed to broaden blockchain applications through supply chain tracking and food traceability projects. Now, the company aspires to complement this approach with the concept of a trust infrastructure for AI agents. VeChain is recognized for its focus on enterprise use cases within the blockchain sector.
Nevertheless, caution persists among industry influencers. For example, Yat Siu, Chairman of Animoca Brands, highlighted that AI agents could operate continuously for crypto investments, but strategies relying on services beyond users’ control might entail significant risks. This underscores the necessity for balanced and vigilant adoption of artificial intelligence within the crypto space.
